Madrid’s influence in politics, education, science, entertainment, media, fashion, and arts make it an important international metropolis, and the major hub in southern Europe. Spain’s capital city is also its largest, with a historic center dating back to the Hapsburg Empire, and world-renowned art museums. A huge variety of tapas bars, dance shows, concerts, parks, soccer matches, ethnic neighborhoods, and contemporary theater and cinema make it a lively place to live and learn.

The Culture

  • Visit a city such as Sevilla, Barcelona, Granada, or Bilbao during an unforgettable overnight excursion.
  • Soak up Spanish culture with museum visits, cooking lessons, urban art tours, film festivals, and neighborhood visits.

  • Housing

    Homestay
    Students can live with Spanish hosts – a great way to absorb maximum language and culture, and create lasting friendships. Hosts range from families to individuals, and welcome one or two CIEE students. Each student has a private bedroom and shared kitchen, bathroom, and laundry facilities.

    Shared apartments
    Students can live with other CIEE students and a Spanish student with apartments that have single and double rooms. Utilities, cleaning, laundry facilities, and Internet access are included.

    Commuting
    Host homes and housing are all in central Madrid and a short commute to the CIEE Global Institute.

  • MEALS

    Homestay: Hosts provided breakfast plus seven meals a week. Students purchase the rest of their meals.

    Apartments: Meals are not included. Students prepare meals in their apartments, or purchase meals on or off campus.

The program details

Summer Open Campus in Madrid allows you to focus on one course in a four-week session with integrated and optional opportunities to explore Spanish society and culture. CIEE helps you get the most out of your stay even before you leave home. Pre-departure orientation is followed by extensive on-site introductions to Madrid, Spanish culture and habits, health and safety information, and academic preparation.

Courses taught at the CIEE Global Institute are for CIEE students only. Each course is a full semester in content, so the pace is quick and the workload demanding. Classes are scheduled Monday-Friday.

  • ACADEMIC CULTURE

    Summer Open Campus in Madrid allows you to focus on one course in a four-week session with integrated and optional opportunities to explore Spanish society and culture.

  • GRADING

    Assessment for the summer courses is typically based on student participation and attendance, reflection papers, a presentation, and final exam.

  • CLASS FORMAT

    Courses taught at the CIEE Global Institute are for CIEE students only. Each course is a full semester in content, so the pace is quick and the workload demanding. Classes are scheduled Monday-Friday. Students should not plan personal travel out of Madrid when classes are in session. CIEE courses are taught in modern classrooms and are designed to follow U.S. academic culture.

Eligibility

  • PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

    One course (3 semester/4.5 quarter hours) per four-week session.

Curriculum

Program Credit

  • Total credit is 3 - 4 semester/4.5 - 6 quarter hourscredits per course, per session (students choose to enroll in one, two, or three sessions).
  • Each session, students enroll in:
    • One CIEE area students course (45 contact hours for 3 semester/4.5 quarter credits)
    • An optional Communicative Spanish Language course (15 contact hours for 1 semester/1.5 quarter credits, may be taken once per student)
