CIEE’s January in Madrid program invites students of all majors to explore family life in Spanish communities. Discover the challenges of educating students to become productive members of society in Spain; learn about the resources and opportunities needed for students’ success; and dive into public policy on social services and parental leave. Classes are taught at the CIEE Global Institute – Madrid, in English and complemented with co-curricular activities designed to increase intercultural understanding.

Madrid’s influence in politics, education, science, entertainment, and arts make it an important international metropolis and a major hub in Southern Europe. Spain’s capital city is also its largest, with a historic center dating back to the Hapsburg Empire. The city hosts world-renowned art museums, a huge variety of tapas bars, dance shows, concerts, parks, soccer matches, bustling neighborhoods, and contemporary theater and cinema, making it a lively place to live and learn. 

Excursions & Activities

Embark on a one-night/two day excursion to a different region of Spain, like one of these:

Córdoba: Explore this UNESCO world heritage city in Andalusia to study its role in the Arab world, history, and today's tourism.

Valencia: Identify the modernista architecture of this Mediterranean city while learning about its tech economy, paella cuisine, and religious traditions.

  • Soak up Spanish culture with visits to museums, urban art tours, and small family owned shops in different neighborhood visits.
  • Connect with other students through sports and active outings.
  • Boost your intercultural skills via language exchange with local peers.

  • Housing

    Shared apartments:  Students live with other CIEE students in furnished apartments that have single and double rooms. Utilities, cleaning, laundry facilities, and internet access are included. Shared apartments are located in central Madrid. All students will be living within a 30-minute or less commute via public transportation to the CIEE Global Institute.

  • Meals

    Meals are not included. Students prepare their own meals in their apartments or purchase affordable meals in their neighborhood at supermarkets, cafeterias, etc

What you need to know

The program details

During the January in Madrid program, all students take the required course: Family, School, and Child Development. In-class work is augmented with co-curricular visits to the city’s rich variety of cultural institutions and organizations relevant to the course offering.

CIEE Global Institute – Madrid is located near the Puerta de Sol. The Institute includes classrooms, lounges, Wi-Fi, student life, and academics.

    Courses taught at CIEE Madrid are for CIEE students only. Courses are taught Monday – Friday. Instruction is supported and augmented online by our learning management system, Canvas.


    Assessment is based on the individual’s overall performance in the course, including essays, coursework, and final examinations or papers. Students must check with their professors to find out exam and project presentation dates. Under no circumstances will CIEE alter deadlines or exam dates for study abroad students who have made conflicting travel plans. The U.S. grading scale of A-F is used.


    The program is made up of three weeks of classes with an intensive orientation beforehand. CIEE classes are designed to follow U.S. academic culture. Class attendance is strictly enforced both for classes and required co-curricular excursions.



    Students need to have a GPA of at least 2.5

CIEE offers the most student support of any provider in its program fee, including an airport greeting, full-time leadership and support, orientation, cultural activities, local excursions, pre-departure advising, and CIEE iNext travel insurance with benefits.

Students are responsible and manage costs related to travel, meals, books, and personal expenses. Below are estimates for consideration.

Meals not included in program fee = $500

Financial Aid

CIEE offers the most grants and scholarships of any study abroad organization, including $8 million/year in travel grants, merit-based scholarships, institutional and MSI grants, and Gilman Go Global Grants.
