Program Overview

This summer, embark on a study of psychoanalysis in two of Europe’s greatest cultural and intellectual capitals.

In Prague you’ll investigate the relationship overlap between psychoanalysis and art, including the mutual influences, borrowings, and inspirations between these two supposedly separate domains. In Paris you’ll examine psychoanalytic thought and critique in the field of 20th and 21st century art, exploring the relationship between madness and creativity, and testing the limits of psychoanalysis to interpret the visual arts.

About the City

About The City

About Prague

Because of its innumerable characteristic steeples, Prague is called the “Hundred-Towered City” and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. A member of the EU, Prague is a perfect example of the steady development of a society, recently transitioning from its communist past. With a population of only 1,200,000, Prague has an unusually rich cultural life, including festivals, operas, concerts, and cultural programs, many of which are accessible to students on a budget. CIEE students experience life similar to that of Czech students and make use of the city’s numerous neighborhoods just like native Praguers.

About Paris

Paris, the capital of France, is a major world metropolis. The Seine River traverses the city; its waterways, quays, and bridges are major thoroughfares, as well as ways to see the city’s most famous monuments, such as the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre museum, and the Notre Dame cathedral. The city is known for its cafés (one for every 200 inhabitants); its parks (Bois de Boulougne, Jardin de Luxembourg, and Bois de Vincennes); and its street life and markets. Paris is also known as a center for culture, art, fashion, gastronomy, and intellectual life.

Sessin I - Prague

PSYC 3002 PGSU: Psychoanalysis and Art
This course studies the area of overlap between psychoanalysis and art, including the mutual influences and inspirations between these two domains. It includes a look at the psychodynamics of the creative process and what motivates us to do art. It looks at the aesthetic experience, how psychoanalysis can help us understand the powerful phenomenon of being confronted with a work of art, art taken in its broadest sense. This leads us to study developments in psychoanalytic aesthetics, explored with various examples from painting, literature and film. The course also looks at the therapeutic aspect of art and at the contemporary clinical practice of art therapy.

CZEC 1001 PGSU: Optional Survival Czech Language Course
This class is designed for students who have little or no previous knowledge of the Czech language and wish to learn basic communications skills. The course provides a simplified introduction to the fundamentals of Czech grammar, syntax, and vocabulary, and practice using language in everyday situations through role-playing. Contact Hours: 15. Recommended credit: 1 semester/1.5 quarter hours.

Session II - Paris

The Unconscious Eye: Psychoanalysis and the Visual Arts
This course will explore psychoanalytic thought and critique in the field of 20th and 21st century visual art. Beginning with Surrealist film and painting, we will discover how psychoanlaysis, particularly in France, changed the way we think about what it means to look at an image, particularly the moving image. We will also explore the various links between madness and creativity, testing the limits of psychoanalysis’ ability to interpret the visual arts. Artists and thinkers such as Breton, Magritte, Bunuel, Artaud, Lacan, Metz, Rose, Doane, Deleuze and Guattari, and Zizek may be considered.
