Location & Culture

Click to Open

Cobblestone streets, ancient bridges, and a hilltop castle help lend the City of a Hundred Spires its reputation as one of the world’s most beautiful. Prague is unique in Europe, having shed its communist past and still brimming with carefully preserved monuments from every period and style in its millennial history. There’s plenty of quirky, too, like the Zizkov Tower adorned with climbing babies, and the distinctly nontraditional Dancing House. Easy to explore on foot, the city boasts a rich cultural life that includes concerts, festivals, operas, and more – many of which you can access on a student budget.

The Culture

EXCURSIONS & ACTIVITIES

  • Explore more of the region with two excursions – one day trip and one overnight trip. Destinations change annually, and have included
    • Terezín, former Jewish ghetto and Nazi labor camp.
    • Sychrov, home of a beautiful neo-Gothic castle and famous gothic fortress built in Roman times.
    • Litomerice, where the Ploskovice castle and historical structures date back to the 13th century.
    • Karlovy Vary, a noted spa town.
    • Plzeň, home of Europe’s second largest synagogue, the Victims of Evil monument, and the George Patton Museum.
  • Get an insider’s view of Prague with the help of your Flat Buddy, a Charles University student who will teach you cultural norms and introduce you to Czech culture.
  • Make your visit official by traversing the Charles Bridge, constructed to cross the Vltava River in 1357.

Daily Life

  • HOUSING

Shared Apartments: Housing is included in the study abroad program fee. Students reside in apartments in popular neighborhoods with fellow CIEE participants and a CIEE Flat Buddy—a Charles University student who helps CIEE students adjust to student life in Prague. Students share double rooms and kitchen and bathroom facilities.

Apartments are located throughout Prague and commuting times and distances vary. It’s important for students to be aware that commuting is part of daily life in Prague, and the location of most apartments requires daily use of public transportation. It is common for the student commute, including public transportation and walking, to take up to 35 minutes one way. A transportation pass is included in the program fees.

  • MEALS

Meals are not included and are the responsibility of the student. Students can purchase food supplies and prepare meals in the apartment kitchens.

The program details

This program introduces students to Prague’s rich heritage by exploring Czech art, film, architecture, society, and history, and examining the Czech Republic’s role in Europe. It offers students a unique opportunity to experience the transition of the Czech society from communism to a fluid political and social environment. Students enroll in one, two, or three four-week summer sessions.

CIEE Prague, where summer classes are taught, is located at Vyšehrad, at the top of one of Prague’s highest hills, within medieval castle walls in a park-like setting 15 minutes from the Old Town. CIEE courses are recognized by Charles University, the oldest university in Central Europe, founded in 1348.

Academics

  • CLASS FORMAT

Summer classes are for CIEE students only. Classes are scheduled Monday-Thursday, with varied weekly structure, i.e., in different weeks the classes may be in session for a different number of days per week. Session-specific class schedule will be distributed during orientation. Our classes are taught in a standard setting of small groups of 15-20 students. In addition to in-class instruction, students can benefit from field trips, guest teachers, and other co-curricular events designed to supplement the course content and enhance student’s firsthand experience.

  • GRADING

Students receive numerical grades which are converted to the U.S. letter grades. Assessment is continuous and is based on overall performance, including class participation, homework assignments, papers, presentations, projects and exams.

  • ACADEMIC CULTURE

Students are expected to demonstrate their pro-active and independent approach to study. Active participation in class as well as outside of class is essential for a satisfactory academic performance and attendance is strictly enforced. Students should expect an average of two hours of preparation required for each hour in class. A class structure typically includes lectures as well as discussions and group projects.

Eligibility

  • OVERALL GPA

Students need to have a GPA of at least 2.5.

Curriculum

Program Credit
