The Frederick Douglass Summer Scholars Grant is awarded to all qualified applicants of the Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship who are not selected for a fellowship. The $1,500 grant can be used toward any CIEE summer program in the year in which the grant is awarded.

Some colleges and universities have agreed to match the Frederick Douglass Summer Scholars Grants for their students. Please check below and/or with your study abroad office to learn whether your school is a matching institution.

Featured Programs

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE FREDERICK DOUGLASS SUMMER SCHOLARS GRANT

  • Submit a qualified application for a Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship, but not be selected for a fellowship
  • Be a current undergraduate freshman or sophomore attending a Minority Serving Institution
  • Be Federal Pell Grant eligible
  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Reside in the U.S. with student status or be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national or permanent resident

FREDERICK DOUGLASS SUMMER SCHOLAR GRANT RECIPIENTS

All Frederick Douglass Summer Scholars Grant Recipients will receive:

  • $1,500 grant toward any of CIEE's programs and internships across the world!
  • $1,500 matching grant if your institution has committed to match
  • Eligible for up to $500 GAIN Travel Grant to cover approved air travel costs to and from your CIEE study abroad program
  • Eligibility for a 20% discount off additional summer sessions
