Why Study Abroad in Denmark

Denmark has a lot to offer. From the country’s eco-friendly practices, unique architecture, and natural beauty, there are plenty of reasons why studying abroad in Denmark could be a perfect choice for you. But we’re sure we’ll be able to convince you in just five.

Reason #1: Denmark is ranked one of the happiest countries in the world.

Denmark is officially ranked as the second-happiest country in the world and has consistently made the list as a top contender for years. What is it about this country that has its citizens so happy? According to the World Happiness Report, Danish people have a lot of trust in the sophisticated systems the country has in place.

For example, residents have noted Denmark’s high level of equality, tuition-free access to high-quality education, and shared common responsibility for social welfare as some of the top practices that keep them content.

Not to mention, the Danish hygge (also known as the Danish way of life) fosters happiness through its simple philosophy: Creating a warm atmosphere and spending time with good people. So, during your Denmark study abroad adventure, try practicing some hygge for yourself – you might find you’re a lot happier for it!

Some super simple hygge practices you can incorporate in your daily life include:

  • Enjoying the company of others
  • Pampering yourself
  • Taking time to reflect
  • Partaking in relaxing activities like a quiet meal, spending time outdoors in the sunshine, or enjoying deep conversation with others
  • Cooking tasty food
  • Cozying up on the couch with your favorite blanket and a warm beverage

Reason #3: Denmark offers all kinds of food and drink tours.

Denmark has been recognized as a growing foodie country for the last decade. When you’re there, make sure to check out some Nordic fusion cuisine where your tastebuds will be hit with unique and delicious flavors and enjoy a tour of the country’s many breweries.

Reason #4: Denmark is home to world-renowned landmarks.

With CIEE, you’ll have the opportunity to do lots of traveling during your Denmark study abroad experience. Some of our favorite excursions include visits to top landmarks like:

Study Abroad in Copenhagen Tips

One last note: There are a few helpful tips and tricks to keep in mind during your study abroad in Copenhagen, including:

  • Denmark is an expensive country. While the cost of your study abroad trip will vary depending on the program you choose, it’s a smart idea to budget ahead of your trip and try to save money where you can, such as by cooking your own food or booking excursions in advance to ensure best prices.

  • Never litter and make sure to hold on to reusable items.
  • Learn some basic Danish phrases. Helpful examples include Goddag, meaning “Good day” or Tak, meaning “thank you.” While English is commonly spoken throughout the country, it’s always helpful to know a few words or phrases in the country’s official language.
