Designed for students from all areas of study, the Advanced Liberal Arts program immerses you in the Spanish education system, where you'll have opportunities to practice your Spanish with local university students. Your courses will be delivered at CIEE's partner school, Universitat de Barcelona (UB), where you'll find a wide range of courses to enroll in across UB's 16 different colleges. Additionally, you'll choose from electives through CIEE Barcelona to round out your academics.
Outside the classroom, you'll participate in exciting co-curricular activities and excursions organized by CIEE to enhance classroom learning and develop intercultural understanding. These outings will give you firsthand experience of the city's countless cultural wonders to bring your academics to life!

Your Destination
Culture, sport, fashion, finance, media, and entertainment – Barcelona is brimming with it all. The largest city on the Mediterranean Sea, Barcelona is home to 1.6 million in the city proper and 4.5 million in the broader metro area. It is edged with a river on either side and backed by the Serra de Collserola mountains to the west.
Castilian Spanish and Catalan are the official languages. Both are regularly used in all aspects of life and Catalan is not imposed. Taxi drivers, shopkeepers, professors, and host families all speak clear Castilian when Spanish speakers are present. Spanish is widely used at the university. Students don’t need to speak Catalan but learning a few words can open doors to making new friends.
CIEE Barcelona is conveniently located in a historical pedestrian passageway in the heart of the city. It houses staff offices, classrooms, and open-air terraces. It is close to the host universities and to the city’s main attractions.
CIEE wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local CIEE staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Barcelona.

- One of our popular day trips takes you to Montserrat, a Benedictine monastery retreat high atop one of the most spectacular mountain ranges in Catalonia. Not only is its history of significant religious importance, but the surrounding natural beauty is nothing short of breathtaking. There you can visit the monastery to see La Moreneta (the black Madonna), listen to the world-renowned Boys’ Choir (whose history dates back to the 14th century), and trek any of the numerous mountain trails where you’ll take in incredible countryside views and see the most unusual rock formations in all of Catalonia. Are you ready? Let’s go!
- Discover the Gràcia neighborhood, famous for its bohemian and artistic style and streets filled with color and culture.
- Visit the oldest preserved garden, reflecting both Neoclassical and Romantic styles – and try your luck in the park’s labyrinth maze!

INTERNSHIP
Gain valuable experience, put your talents to good use, and get a real feel for everyday life in Barcelona with an internship. Past students have updated the website for the Centre for Discourse Studies, managed the Language Lab at the Centro de Autoaprendizaje de Lenguas at the UB, and helped staff in the UB Office of Mobility and International Programs. Students applying for an internship are required to submit additional materials during the course selection process.
HERITAGE LEARNERS TRACK
Heritage learners take the course Spanish for Heritage Learners* in addition to other CIEE and elective university courses chosen from the entire University of Barcelona curriculum. CIEE provides a list of recommended direct-enrollment courses.
*Students who demonstrate near-native speaker level in their onsite placement test or prove they are Spanish-heritage students at a bilingual level will be exempt from this language course requirement.

HOUSING
All housing is within a 30-minute commute to CIEE.
Homestays: Live with a Spanish family, with or without another CIEE student, and immerse yourself in the city’s language and culture. Each student has an individual room.
Apartments: Students can live in apartments shared with other CIEE students. If local health and safety regulations permit, most students live in double or triple rooms. Each apartment will have shared common spaces, including kitchen and bathroom.
Residence Halls: Students usually live with a mix of CIEE students and other local and international students. If local health and safety regulations permit, students live in single, double, or triple rooms. Students usually share kitchens and common areas.
Independent Housing is not permitted unless:
- You have a relative in the host city
- You have a medical condition that we are not able to support with our existing housing options
- Requested and approved by CIEE (even if these conditions are met)
Housing is tight in Barcelona. If we can’t accommodate your first housing choice, we’ll let you know before you arrive.

MEALS
Homestay students have breakfast and dinner with their host families, and they are responsible for lunch. Meals are not included at residence halls or apartments.

Getting Around
Students use public transportation to get from their lodgings to CIEE Barcelona – no more than a 30-minute ride. Students get to UB classes by walking or taking the metro.

The Advanced Liberal Arts program in Barcelona is geared toward students with advanced Spanish language skills – at least six semesters of college-level Spanish (or equivalent). The program allows students to take courses at the University of Barcelona (UB) across a wide range of topics, and become part of the vibrant UB campus community, as well as take courses at CIEE Barcelona with other CIEE students. All students take an advanced Spanish language course in preparation for their courses at UB. Starting in the spring of 2024, a language course will be optional for students who demonstrate adequate proficiency. Before arrival, students meet virtually and individually with the CIEE Barcelona Program Manager to select their UB courses. Each term, one or two University of Barcelona graduate students intern at CIEE Barcelona helping the program participants with their courses if they need it.
Students agree to speak only Spanish to encourage language and cultural acquisition.
Important Note about Exam Dates: Students are required to stay in Barcelona until they have completed their University of Barcelona exams. Official UB Fall exams are in January, and official UB Spring exams are in June. However, early exams in December and May may be possible, but they should be confirmed on an individual basis with the professor at the start of the regular semester session, during the add/drop period. Please note that it is up to the discretion of each professor to allow the taking of final exams before the start of the official examination period. You will be provided with housing until all your exams are completed. As it is impossible to confirm your exam schedule prior to your arrival, if your priority is to leave Barcelona as soon as your university finals are finished, please book an airline ticket with a low change fee or a flexible departure date.

Program Requirements
Through Fall 2023, students take five courses in Spanish for a total of 15 U.S. credits:
- One CIEE Advanced Spanish language course
- One to two CIEE culture courses
- CIEE culture courses
- Internship (optional)
- Two to four University of Barcelona courses
As of Spring 2024, students will take 4 to 5 courses in Spanish for a total of 12-15 U.S. credits:
- 1-3 University of Barcelona courses
- CIEE elective courses (options include a language course, content courses, and the internship)
As of the Spring 2024 semester, a CIEE Advanced Spanish language course will no longer be required, but still strongly recommended. Individual sending schools can still opt to make it a requirement for their students.

Academic Culture
UB classes involve less guidance than U.S. students are accustomed to: Syllabi are less detailed and there are fewer assessments. CIEE courses are more typically American, with carefully monitored attendance, regular assignments and exams, and participation all being important factors in grading.
Class Format
University of Barcelona (UB) classrooms may be traditional or modern and may include up to 80 students. CIEE classrooms are smaller and have 10-25 students on average.
Grading
For CIEE courses, the U.S. grading scale of A-F is used. University professors grade on a 10-point scale, which CIEE converts to recommended U.S. letter-grade equivalents

The Department of Biology offers scientific training in the basic and applied aspects of biology; molecular biology and genetics; cell biology and physiology; and evolution, ecology, and biodiversity. Department of Communication & Cultural Industries
The Department of Communication and Cultural Industries offers training in the strategies and practices of the media and communications industry, government policymakers, and the third sector. Department of Economic Sciences/Business/International Affairs
Throughout its various departments, the Diagonal Campus (a 20-minute metro ride from the city center) offers a broad spectrum of courses in economics and techniques in the analysis of local, European, and world economies, and international affairs, as well as classes in business. The Department of Medicine & Health Sciences has three campuses (Hospital Clínic, Bellvitge, and Sant Joan de Déu), three tertiary-level university hospitals, eight hospitals associated with high-quality care, teaching, and research, and 22 primary care centers with the necessary teaching and research infrastructure in libraries, dissection rooms, research, and practical laboratories, computer rooms, study rooms, communication skills laboratories, clinical skills laboratories, and facilities to simulate critical care. Department of Modern Language
Located in the city center, the Department of Modern Language is housed in the historic building of the University of Barcelona. The department offers courses in modern language and literature, literary theory, classic languages, and literature. Courses: Greek, Latin, Hebrew, Catalan, Galician, Basque, German, French, Italian, Hebrew, Arabic, Dutch, Swedish, Romanian, Portuguese, Polish, Russian, and Slavic languages.
Department of Philosophy
The Department of Philosophy offers a historical and critical study of the fundamental ideas of the western tradition and present world with courses on the history of philosophy and science, logic and philosophy of the sciences, and moral and political philosophy.
