Academic Culture

The academic environment at CIEE London offers a focused and immersive experience for students, blending rigorous coursework with hands-on learning opportunities to deepen understanding of both academic subjects and the local culture.

CIEE courses typically run from Monday through Thursday, providing students with a concentrated schedule that allows for intensive study and exploration. This condensed format encourages students to fully engage with the material and make the most of their time in London.

In addition to lectures, CIEE courses often incorporate local field trips and co-curricular activities, providing students with firsthand exposure to the rich cultural heritage and diverse landscapes of London and its surroundings. These experiences not only enhance academic learning but also foster a deeper appreciation and understanding of the local context.

Attendance is considered mandatory in CIEE courses, with absences impacting final grades. This emphasizes the importance of active participation and engagement in the learning process, encouraging students to fully commit to their academic pursuits.

Overall, the academic environment at CIEE London offers a comprehensive and immersive educational experience, combining rigorous coursework with experiential learning opportunities to enrich students' academic and cultural understanding.

Arizona State University: Most ASU online courses are asynchronous. You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. You’ll receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online.

Class Format

Courses taught at the CIEE study center are typically for CIEE students only. Host institution classes include both local and international students. A typical class schedule includes a combination of both CIEE and Host Institution-administered classes and will span from Monday to Friday. Classes at both CIEE and Host Institution meet 2-4 times per week, for anywhere from 1-3 hours per class session, depending on the course. Attendance in CIEE classes is strictly enforced, both for classes and required co-curricular excursions. Instruction is supported and augmented online by CIEE’s learning management system, Canvas.

Classes at QMUL are typically scheduled Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students are expected to complete 2-3 hours of independent work for every hour in class. Some courses – e.g. languages – meet for 10 hours per week. Others – e.g. STEM – meet for 6-8 hours per week with an expectation of 20-25 hours of independent work outside of labs/seminars/lectures. Others – e.g. History – meet for one-hour lectures plus a seminar per module per week with an expectation of 3 hours of work per one hour in class per module. Most courses combine lectures with local field trips and excursions to help students gain a better understanding of the local culture.

ASU online courses meet in “sessions” that are 7.5-weeks long in the semester, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other CIEE courses begin or end.

Grading

CIEE reports all final course grades to students’ home institutions using a U.S. letter grade equivalent scale of A-F. For CIEE-administered courses, students’ grades are based on attendance, class engagement, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi. Host Institution courses are graded using a 20-point grading scale, and primary assessments may be held as either oral or written examinations, and final exams are typically worth 50-70% of the final grade for the course. Attendance is compulsory in Host Institution classes. Students must attend a minimum of 80% of all class sessions to be permitted to sit for the final exam.

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person. “Pass/fail” or “Audit” is not allowed for CIEE students.

Individual courses may have additional prerequisites; for CIEE courses, these are listed in the syllabi below. Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors. Your study abroad advisor and CIEE staff can help you understand your course options if you don't see a recommendation that fits your course needs.
