Saying Yes to Study Abroad: My Life-Changing Semester with CIEE Rome
By: Emily Nelson
When I first applied to study abroad with CIEE Rome, I knew it would be an adventure, but nothing could have prepared me for just how impactful this experience would be. Now, as I sit here reflecting on my time in Italy, I’m filled with immense gratitude for everything I’ve learned, the places I’ve seen, and the incredible people I’ve met along the way.
Living in Rome has been like stepping into a living museum with ancient ruins around every corner, cobblestone streets steeped in history, and the smell of fresh espresso always in the air. But more than the beauty of the Eternal City, it’s the sense of connection and discovery that has made this time so special.
Through CIEE’s immersive and flexible Open Campus program, I’ve not only gained academic knowledge, but also a deeper understanding of the world and myself. I’ve learned how to adapt to unfamiliar environments, communicate across cultures, and navigate new challenges with confidence. Whether I was learning in the classroom, sharing a meal with local friends, or figuring out public transportation in a new city, each moment brought something valuable.
One of the most unforgettable parts of this journey has been the travel. During my time abroad, I’ve explored 10 incredible countries including Italy, Spain, France, Switzerland, the UK, Ireland, Croatia, and Hungary, among others. Each place had its own rhythm, its own stories, and its own lessons to share. I’ve tried new foods, learned bits of new languages, and stepped far outside my comfort zone.
Of course, no experience like this would be complete without the people. I’ve met some of the most amazing friends—fellow students who have become travel buddies, roommates, and lifelong friends. Together, we’ve figured out train schedules, shared gelato, gotten lost (and found), and laughed until our stomachs hurt.
This semester has been more than I ever dreamt it would be. It’s been a time of growth, exploration, and joy. I leave Rome with a full heart, a passport full of stamps, and memories that I’ll carry with me forever.
To anyone considering studying abroad: say yes. Take the leap. Let yourself grow in ways you never imagined. CIEE Rome has given me more than I could have ever asked for—and I am endlessly thankful.
Arrivederci, Roma. You’ll always have a piece of my heart.
