Why I Chose Rome — And Why You Might Too
By: Brianna Sullivan
Hi everyone! I’m Brianna Sullivan, and this Spring 2025, I’m studying abroad with CIEE in Rome, Italy. The people I’ve met, the places I’ve explored, the lessons I’ve learned, and (of course) the incredible food I’ve eaten have changed my perspectives in ways I never imagined.
You might wonder, “Of all the places you could choose, why Rome?” After reading this, I hope you’ll be thinking, “How could I choose anywhere else?”
Rome is a city where iconic landmarks and secret treasures coexist around every corner. No matter how long you spend in Rome, it will never be long enough. There’s always something new (or very old!) to see, lessons to learn, connections to make, and history to uncover. Sure, there are the classics (and you should absolutely visit them!): the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, St. Peter’s Basilica, etc., but dig a little deeper and you will be rewarded! Take a stroll through the Botanical Gardens of Rome or row a boat in Villa Borghese while the harpist plays a tune. Roam around Piazza Navona, built atop the old Stadium of Domitian, or Campo de Fiori where you can find a lively market with endless fruit, veggie, pasta, and item options. Learn about Castel Sant’Angelo – the mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian turned into a museum – or the Chiesa di Sant’Ignazio di Loyola where, should you visit, you will find a magnificent illusion if you step under the dome of the church.
Now, I don’t want to spoil all of Rome’s secrets before you get there. I’ll let you find the rest yourself!
Feel free to DM me if you have any questions or just want to hear more about CIEE Rome — I’d love to chat! (IG: sullivan.bri)
