A Perfect Day Trip to Amalfi
By: Kylie Rashkin
One of the best parts of studying abroad in Rome is how easy it is to explore other parts of Italy. With just a train and a ferry ride, we found ourselves in one of the most breathtaking destinations in the country, the Amalfi Coast.
Our journey started early in the morning from Roma Termini, where we boarded a train to Salerno. The ride was smooth and scenic, with glimpses of the Italian countryside along the way. Once we arrived in Salerno, we stopped at a cafe for a cappuccino and croissant and then hopped on a ferry that took us straight to Amalfi. If you ever visit, I highly recommend taking the ferry instead of a bus, the views of the coastline from the water are absolutely stunning. Seeing the pastel-colored buildings perched on the cliffs as we approached Amalfi was an experience in itself.
Since we were only in Amalfi for the day, we wanted to make the most of our time. After a bit of wandering through the charming streets, we made our way down to the beach. The weather was perfect, warm but not too hot, so we took some time to relax and even met some friendly locals.
Of course, no trip to the Amalfi Coast is complete without indulging in some amazing food, We had lunch at Stella Maris, a restaurant located right on the beach. We all got margarita pizzas and finished off with some classic limoncello. After lunch, we strolled through Amalfi, got some postcards, and stopped for gelato before making our way back to the ferry. Watching the sun start to set over the coastline as we cruised back to Salerno was the perfect way to wrap up the day.
This trip was a reminder of how lucky we were to be studying abroad in such a beautiful country. Even with a packed schedule, making time for day trips like this was so worth it. If you’re ever in Rome and looking for a quick escape to the coast, Amalfi is a must-see!
