Seville has its origins in the trade routes controlled by the Phoenicians in the 8th century BC. Romans, Goths, Muslims, and Christians established their capital here before it became the most important city in Southern Europe and gateway to the Americas in the 16th century. As the commercial hub of its region, the city preserves many traces of its past and traditions. With 700,000 residents, Seville offers a large variety of cultural activities that range from the Flamenco Biennial and the European Film Festival to alternative theater venues, bars with live music, beautiful streets and open spaces and, of course, one of the most respected bullrings in the world. Additionally, Seville’s neighborhoods have 160km of bike trails, making it one of the best cities in world for bikers.

  • HOUSING

Homestays: Most students choose to live with a Spanish-speaking family. Homestays generally are limited to one student per household; however, we can usually accommodate requests to be placed with another student - subject to approval from the study abroad office. Each student will have his/her own bedroom, and weekly cleaning, laundry and Internet are provided. Students usually walk or ride rented bikes, but may also be able to take public transportation when available; average commute to classes is 20-30 minutes.

Residence Halls: Students have individual bedrooms with bathroom, kitchen, internet, and weekly cleaning and linen service. Halls have common spaces, and students can opt to pay for meal plans, laundry, gym and pool services and more. Students should expect a 20- 40-minute commute, riding a rented bike or city bus. *Please note: the residence hall is NOT available for session III for which participants during this session must choose a homestay

  • MEALS

Homestay: Three meals per day are provided by the host. Residence halls: Meals are not provided. Students have access to kitchens and cafeterias.

Academics

Students choose one, two, or three 4-week sessions and enroll in one language or content course per session. Courses are taught by highly qualified faculty and professionals who are experienced in teaching Spanish as a foreign language. All CIEE faculty are familiar with the U.S. academic system and culture. In-class work is augmented with co-curricular visits to the city’s rich variety of cultural institutions and organizations relevant to the course offering.

Language placement – Prior to departure for Seville, all students take a scheduled CIEE online placement exam. Results determine appropriate placement in language courses. Placement in many upper-level courses depends on a high score.

CIEE Seville is located in the center of Seville in a beautifully renovated palace built in 1725. The facility includes classrooms, computer room, student services, Language Resource Center, and resident staff.

Early departure for, or late return from, personal trips on weekends is not permitted. Any extended travel should take place prior to the start of the program or upon completion of the program.

Class Format

Participants take classes with other CIEE students only.

Grading

Students are graded on mid-term and final examinations, assignments, class participation, and attendance. Attendance is mandatory and unexcused absences are reflected in a participant’s final grade.
