Academic Projects

For-credit directed independent research in English is for qualified students who have demonstrated academic rigor and curiosity toward a particular research topic. Independent research topics will be approved by CIEE Singapore Academic staff and the home institution and must reflect a topic that is relevant to Singapore. To be accepted into this course, students must submit a structured proposal with topic of exploration, significance of research topic as it relates to Singapore, methodology, a literature review, and a schedule of research milestones. Upon research completion, students will present their findings to a panel of academics.

For-credit Service-learning Project: The service-learning course in Singapore combines a structured curriculum and extensive partnership with a local community-based organization to offer tangible community service. Here, student community service includes direct engagement as well as a research-based action plan addressing a specific challenge or goal identified by a community-based organization. Students begin by exploring key community-based organizations: examining their mission, vision, and goals, and the place of the organization in the local community.

A for-credit part-time internship in English allows students the opportunity to have practical work experience in a company within engineering, technology, or science sectors. In addition to the on-site experience, students participating in an internship program have a weekly classroom component, which provides academic support to their practical experience. Examples of internships students have done in the past include: Research Intern at National University of Singapore. Engineering Intern at an Optics company.

Academic Culture

The academic environment at CIEE Singapore offers a focused and immersive experience for students, blending rigorous coursework with hands-on learning opportunities to deepen understanding of both academic subjects and the local culture. CIEE courses typically run from Monday through Thursday, providing students with a concentrated schedule that allows for intensive study and exploration. This condensed format encourages students to fully engage with the material and make the most of their time in Singapore. Academics use Canvas to share content with students, and students use it to access subject information.

In addition to lectures, CIEE courses often incorporate local field trips and co-curricular activities, providing students with firsthand exposure to the rich cultural heritage and diverse landscapes of Singapore and its surroundings. These experiences not only enhance academic learning but also foster a deeper appreciation and understanding of the local context.

James Cook University: The academic environment at James Cook University University (JCU) in Australia has an academic environment that emphasizes experiential learning, student agency, and technology-enhanced learning. JCU's digital learning environment, which includes a learning management system, Blackboard Learn Ultra, and other tools. Academics use LearnJCU to share content with students, and students use it to access subject information. JCU's research focuses on global challenges and improving outcomes for people in the tropics. JCU also has a 5-star rating for research from QS Stars.

ASU Courses: You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. Some are earning their degrees entirely online, while others, like you, are supplementing their education with an online course. You’ll receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online. Most ASU online courses are asynchronous, meaning there are no set log-in times, but make sure to verify this before the add/drop deadline in case you want to make a change.

Class Format

Courses taught at CIEE Singapore are typically for CIEE students only. JCU classes include both local and international students. A typical class schedule includes a combination of both CIEE and JCU classes and will span from Monday to Friday. Classes at both CIEE and Host Institution meet 2-4 times per week, for anywhere from 1-3 hours per class session, depending on the course. Attendance in CIEE and JCU classes are strictly enforced, both for classes and required co-curricular excursions. Instruction is supported and augmented online as well. This emphasizes the importance of active participation and engagement in the learning process, encouraging students to fully commit to their academic pursuits. Similar to classes at U.S. institutions, students should expect to spend an average of two hours of preparation and study for each hour in CIEE classes. To avoid falling behind, students should not plan personal travel out of Singapore when classes are in session and plan trips for the long weekends.

ASU online courses meet in “sessions” that are 7.5 weeks long in semesters and 6 weeks long in the summer, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other CIEE courses begin or end. You’ll need a standard PC or Mac desktop or laptop computer with a download speed higher than 25 Mbps, as well as access to email, productivity software like Microsoft Office and other applications needed to perform a variety of educational functions. Most course materials you will need are available online. Since you are working mostly or entirely asynchronously, you’re given deadlines for your assignments by your instructor or in your syllabus, but you can work at your own pace within these due dates. Most instructors suggest a recommended pace to optimize your learning, but you have the flexibility to complete your ASU courses while pursuing your studies at your CIEE location.

Grading

CIEE reports all final course grades to students’ home institutions using a U.S. letter grade equivalent scale of A-F. For CIEE-administered courses, students’ grades are based on attendance, class participation, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi. Host Institution courses are graded using a 20-point grading scale, and primary assessments may be held as either oral or written examinations, and final exams are typically worth 50-70% of the final grade for the course. Attendance is compulsory in Host Institution classes. Students must attend a minimum of 80% of all class sessions to be permitted to sit for the final exam.

ASU grading: As a U.S. institution of higher education, the grading practices should be familiar to any CIEE student. “Pass/fail” or “Audit” grading options are not allowed for CIEE students. Please see the CIEE Academic Manual for Students for more information about your grades.
