Residence hall: Students may live in an on-campus residence hall with a mix of CIEE students, local university students, and resident assistants. Students live in single rooms with en-suite bathrooms and shower facilities. Lounges and kitchens allow students to meet over meals, cultural activities, study groups, and special events. They are shared spaces, with students enjoying the benefits but also the responsibility of taking care of them. Larger common areas are on the ground floor and inner courtyards offer comfortable spaces to work and relax.
Shared Apartments: Students may also be housed in shared apartments when available. Students may live in single rooms similar to the Residence Hall. Each apartment will have shared common spaces, including kitchen and bathroom.
*Accepted students can indicate a housing preference, but final housing assignments are solely at the discretion of CIEE.
Meals are not included in the program cost. In both housing styles, students can prepare their own meals within the kitchen facilities. CIEE provides basic cooking utensils and cleaning supplies. Students can also explore the myriad restaurants in our multicultural Kreuzberg neighborhood or throughout the city. Students should be prepared to have a food budget.
Where You'll Study
CIEE Global Institute-Berlin
Located in the heart of the Kreuzberg district, one of the most popular neighborhoods in Berlin, our campus contains the best of both worlds, with a U.S.-style residence life program within a local German neighborhood. The campus also offers easy access to a variety of shops, markets, restaurants, and cafes.
Students will commute mostly via public transportation. We provide an introduction to the system during orientation, and students are responsible for securing their own public transportation pass.
AcademicsClick to Open
As a global intern in Berlin, you’ll intern in a non-paying position within a wide range of opportunities across a diverse set of industries. Extra-curricular excursions and cultural activities in and around Berlin complement your coursework and immerse you in the history and culture of the city.
This semester length program (18 weeks) includes a 6-week block of academic coursework and a 12-week block of full-time internship and course. During the 6-week block of academic coursework, participants enroll in two elective Open Campus courses. In addition to the required 6-week block of courses at the start of the program, participants are also provided the option to take one additional Open Campus course during Block II and/or Block III should their schedules allow. Class environment varies depending on the course and is designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. All internships are offered in English.
There are no specific language requirements for this program.
Students participating in the Berlin Semester Global Internship program must maintain full-time student status at their home university while participating in the CIEE program and must have matriculated full-time at their home university at least three months prior to application. Students must have completed at least their first semester/quarter of university studies prior to application in order to present an academic transcript. Students should be prepared to obtain a signed letter from their home university confirming student matriculation details.
*Additional visa restrictions may apply and CIEE will advise students as part of the early application process.
Upon completing the two electives during the first six-week block, students participate in an academic course taught in an online learning environment alongside the 12-week, full-time internship. The two 6-week elective courses, internship course and the internship are all required components of the program.
Students will enroll in:
- Two CIEE elective courses offered on a 6-week academic block system

CIEE courses are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. The class environment for elective courses typically features a combination of traditional lecture and discussion. The integrated academic course which correlates with the 12-week internship is taught primarily in an online learning environment to complement the internship experience. Students are expected to dress and behave professionally throughout their internship and are subject to the agreed-upon internship protocols arranged by CIEE and the host organization.
Students begin by taking two CIEE elective courses offered on a 6-week academic block system. All courses are customized for and open only to CIEE students. Elective classes include a combination of lectures, group work, presentations, and discussions. The second part of the program includes a 12-week CIEE full-time internship and academic course and optional 6-week CIEE elective course in Block II and/or Block III. Students should expect to intern traditional full-time business hours, which typically results in exceeding the 225-300 minimum internship hours. On average, in Berlin, students intern 35-40 hours/week.
The U.S. grading scale of A-F is used. Final grades are based on class participation, homework, individual project work, presentations, and midterm and final exams.
