Housing & Meals

Housing

CIEE Toulouse offers a variety of housing options to ensure you are comfortable in your home away from home. From homestays to residence halls, all housing has direct access to plenty of shopping, supermarkets, restaurants, and public transportation.

Standard Housing: Includes an individual room in the home of a French family, with or without another CIEE student. Students share meals (breakfast and dinner on weekdays; all meals on weekends) and common spaces with their hosts. Homestays are located within a 45-minute commute from CIEE Toulouse.

Select Housing: Includes a single room with a private bathroom and shared kitchen in a residence hall. Residence halls are located under 30 minutes from CIEE Toulouse. Select housing requires an additional fee.

A note: The default criterion to assign housing is first-come, first-served; however, other factors may also be considered. If we cannot accommodate your first housing choice, we'll let you know before you arrive. Non-standard housing options require an additional fee that can be found in the program Dates and Fees.

Meals

Homestay: All meals are offered at the homestay on the weekend, and students typically eat breakfast and dinner with their hosts on weekdays. Lunch can be purchased at local cafés, restaurants, and markets throughout the city.

Academics

CIEE Toulouse: Study in the middle of Toulouse's vibrant center near all main commerical facilities and cultural sites. CIEE Toulouse boasts three classrooms, a student lounge, and an academic advising office.

Sciences Po: Sciences Po will allow CIEE students to take a STEM course in Psychology or non-STEM courses in International Comparative Studies in English. A selection of the Science Po degree courses taught in French are also open to international students. The current student population is about 1700 at Sciences Po. The campus is centrally located.

Arizona State University (ASU): Brought to you by CIEE in partnership with ASU, enhance your international coursework with online classes that align with your degree requirements. ASU offers thousands of online courses in asynchronous 7.5-week sessions that fit within the CIEE academic calendar.

On-Program Requirements

Academic Culture

CIEE courses typically run from Monday through Thursday, providing students with a concentrated schedule that allows for intensive study and exploration. This condensed format encourages students to fully engage with the material and make the most of their time in Toulouse.

In addition to lectures, CIEE courses often incorporate local field trips and co-curricular activities, providing students with firsthand exposure to the rich cultural heritage and diverse landscapes of Toulouse and its surroundings. These experiences not only enhance academic learning but also foster a deeper appreciation and understanding of the local context.

Attendance is mandatory in CIEE courses, with absences impacting final grades. This emphasizes the importance of active participation and engagement in the learning process, encouraging students to fully commit to their academic pursuits.

Host institution classes take place Monday through Friday.

Arizona State University: Most ASU online courses are asynchronous. You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. You’ll receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online.

Class Format

Students should expect to have daily homework assignments and continuous assessment both at CIEE and at Sciences Po. Similar to classes at U.S. institutions, students should expect to spend an average of two hours of preparation and study for each hour in CIEE classes. The individual student workload may vary a lot depending on faculties at Sciences Po. Host Institution professors expect students to complete requested assignments but will not necessarily remind students nor will they systematically check that the student completed course work.

ASU online courses meet in “sessions” that are 7.5-weeks long in the semester, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other CIEE courses begin or end.

Grading

CIEE reports all final course grades to students’ home institutions using a U.S. letter grade equivalent scale of A-F. For CIEE-administered courses, students’ grades are based on attendance, class participation, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi. Host Institution professors use a French grading scale which CIEE converts into pre-determined recommended U.S. letter grade equivalents. Assessment is typically based on essays, written tests, oral presentations, out-of-class projects, class participation, and final exams.

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person. “Pass/fail” or “Audit” is not allowed for CIEE students.

Individual courses may have additional prerequisites; for CIEE courses, these are listed in the syllabi below. Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors. Your study abroad advisor and CIEE staff can help you understand your course options if you don't see a recommendation that fits your course needs.
