  • HOUSING

    Student Residence: Students usually live with other international students. Students share kitchens and common areas.

    Homestay: Live with a French-speaking family, with or without another CIEE student, and immerse yourself in the city’s language and culture. Each student has an individual room and weekly laundry service. A limited number of homestays may be available, with preference given to those whose universities require living with a local family.

  • MEALS

    Student Residence: Meals are not provided for students staying in the residence. Each room has access to a shared kitchen where students may prepare their meals.

    Homestays: Students who live with homestay families receive breakfast daily plus five additional meals per week.

Academics

Students choose one, two, or three 4-week sessions and immerse themselves in French culture while exploring topics of literature, art, history, film studies, and architecture. Students can also opt to take a Communicative French Language course (1 credit) during a single session. All courses are taught by faculty from a range of Paris institutions and are specialists in their respective fields. In-class work is augmented with co-curricular visits to the city’s rich variety of cultural institutions and organizations relevant to the course offerings.

All students must enroll in one 3-credit CIEE course per session

Total credit: 3-4 U.S. semester/4.5-6 quarter credits per session

  • CIEE Communicative Language course: 1 U.S. semester/1.5 quarter credits; 15 contact hours

Academic Culture

Each four-week course is a full semester in content, so the pace is accelerated and the workload demanding. CIEE courses are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. To avoid falling behind, students should not plan personal travel out of Paris when classes are in session.

Class Format

Courses taught at the CIEE Paris are for CIEE students only. Classes are scheduled Monday-Friday. Classes are made up of a mix of lectures, discussions, field trips, guest lectures, and other excursions that provide a unique, place-based academic experience. Attendance is strictly enforced both for classes and required co-curricular excursions.

Grading

You’ll be graded on a combination of participation, written tests, short papers, and oral exposés. Participation and punctuality in all classes weigh heavily in student evaluations.
