Overview

Your Scan Design Foundation Environmental Sustainability Internship program lasts 8 weeks and features two key components: A full-time internship at a Danish host company focused on environmentally sustainable business practices and a 6-credit internship seminar. Designed for students passionate about environmental sustainability, this program offers the opportunity to gain real-world work experience in one of the world’s greenest cities. The 2026 Scan Design Foundation Environmental Sustainability Internship participants will spend May 19 to July 12, 2026, in Copenhagen and participate in 6-credit internship seminar and a fully immersive internship at a Danish host organization focused on environmentally sustainable business practices. Interns will explore environmental sustainability in the Danish context, learning about Denmark’s commitment to sustainable, low-carbon, resource-efficient practices. From core Danish approaches to sustainable practices, the interns will compare how Denmark and the U.S. approach environmental sustainability. Interns will round out their experience by developing a network of international contacts that will prepare them for a successful future finding innovative and sustainable solutions to the world’s most pressing environmental challenges.

There are no specific language requirements for this program.

Additional Requirements

  • Be a current undergraduate or graduate student from an accredited institution and be returning to their institution in the 2026-27 academic year
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 
  • Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or permanent resident 
  • Be Pell Grant-eligible 
  • Have a demonstrated interest in environmental and sustainability fields
  • Submit a complete application no later than November 21, 2025 

After the program, participants commit to sharing their international internship experience with their campus community to promote the power of international education and encourage peers to study or intern abroad.

Recommendations

You must secure a letter of recommendation from someone who knows you well (university staff member, mentor, advisor, boss), and can address your leadership potential, ability to succeed in an international work environment, and history of service. 

Personal Video 
Think of this as your interview. Please submit a 4-5-minute video that answers the following questions: 

  • What inspires you to pursue an international experience, and how does this align with your academic, personal, or career goals?
  • The Scan Design Foundation emphasizes connections between Denmark and the United States. Why are you interested in learning from Danish culture, and how do you envision sharing your own cultural perspective while abroad?
  • Describe a challenge or leadership experience you’ve had that shaped the way you collaborate with and support others. What did you learn from it?
  • Studying and living abroad often means navigating unfamiliar environments. Can you share an example of a time you had to adapt to a new situation and what that experience taught you about resilience?

Requirements

Students participate in a 6-credit internship seminar taught in a hybrid learning environment alongside the eight-week, full-time internship. Participation in the integrated academic course and internship is mandatory for all participants.

Total credit: 6 U.S. semester/9 quarter credits

Internship: 6 U.S. semester/9 quarter credits; 15 integrated academic course hours, 225-300 internship placement hours

Academic Culture

Students are expected to dress and behave professionally throughout their internship project and are subject to the agreed-upon internship protocols arranged by CIEE and the host organizations. The academic course is designed to prepare students for leadership in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse workforce.

Class Format

Class and/or work hours may be scheduled Monday-Friday, and attendance is strictly enforced for all. To avoid falling behind, students should not plan personal travel away from the city when classes are in session.

Grading

Students will be assessed via assignments and activities related to the academic course, including but not limited to: Online discussion forums, reflective papers, individual or group presentations, analysis of readings, an internship work plan, and feedback from the internship supervisor. Internship supervisors and students each provide written evaluations of progress toward goals.

The 2026 Scan Design Foundation Environmental Sustainability Internship participants will take a 6-credit academic internship seminar while on the program.
