Academic Culture

CIEE courses are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. The class environment typically features a combination of traditional lecture and discussion with co-curricular excursions and activities. Heavy emphasis is placed on student engagement, so attendance is mandatory.

The academic environment at CIEE Copenhagen offers a focused and immersive experience for students, blending rigorous coursework with hands-on learning opportunities to deepen understanding of both academic subjects and the local culture.

Canvas is the primary digital tool used to manage learning outside of the classroom and communications with the instructor.

Overall, the academic environment at CIEE Copenhagen offers a comprehensive and immersive educational experience, combining rigorous coursework, experiential learning opportunities, and rich co-curricular and cultural activities to enrich students' academic and cultural understanding.

Arizona State University: Most ASU online courses are asynchronous. You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. You’ll receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online.

Class Format

CIEE courses typically run from Monday through Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., allowing for intensive study and exploration. This format encourages students to fully engage with the material and make the most of their time in Copenhagen.

During this 12-week program, CIEE courses will be slightly more intense than typical 15-week courses. As they are especially designed to highlight Danish perspectives on the topic of study, they will be interesting and academically demanding. They will also be student and learning-centered, engaging you and your peers in learning activities. Classes will be small, allowing you ample space to interact with your instructor. Classes at CIEE typically meet 2-4 times per week, for anywhere from 1-3 hours per class session, depending on the course. As with most U.S. universities, students should expect about 2 hours of study for each hour in class. Attendance in CIEE classes is mandatory, both for classes and required co-curricular excursions. Instruction is supported and augmented online by CIEE’s learning management system, Canvas.

ASU online courses meet in “sessions” that are 7.5-weeks long in the semester, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other CIEE courses begin or end.

Grading

CIEE reports all final course grades to students’ home institutions using a U.S. letter grade equivalent scale of A-F. For CIEE-administered courses, students’ grades are based on class participation, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi. Attendance is compulsory in CIEE classes.

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person. “Pass/fail” or “Audit” is not allowed for CIEE students.

Individual courses may have additional prerequisites; for CIEE courses, these are listed in the syllabi below.
