Studying Abroad: The Best Decision of My Life
By: Jessica Udelman
In the first couple of months of my junior year, I knew I needed to make an important decision in my life- I needed to decide if I wanted to go abroad or not. I had gone back and forth on whether or not I wanted to, and I could not decide. I knew I needed to go out and explore the world, but part of me was so scared to leave home.
I have been considering studying abroad since I was a freshman in college. So many people have told me what a great experience it is and how I need to do it. I was always hesitant, but I kept it in the back of my mind.
September 26th, 2024. I remember the day so clearly. I was sitting in my Sports Business class at Arizona State University, feeling bored and lost in my thoughts. The deadline to apply to study abroad was just one day away. I kept trying to push this thought out of my head. But for some reason, in the middle of my class, it all just hit me. I had decided: I knew I needed to study abroad.
I texted my mom and told her, “I’m doing it. I’m going to study abroad in Barcelona this spring.” She responded and was shocked since I had been so hesitant to go. I completed my forms and application at the last minute, getting them in on time.
Flash forward, I am sitting here on my last day in Barcelona, and I can easily say that was the best decision of my life. Studying abroad is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience; I got to live like a local in Barcelona. After class, I casually strolled past the Sagrada Familia, as it was a regular sight! I explored all the sights, museums, and shops and found my new favorite food: Patatas Bravas. On the weekends, I took trips all over! I visited Paris, Madrid, London, Amsterdam, Lisbon, Marrakech, and many other amazing places.
While sad to be done, I will forever cherish the memories and experiences of studying abroad in Barcelona. The city’s culture and charm are one-of-a-kind. Barcelona will always have a special place in my heart.
