Studying Abroad in Barcelona with CIEE: A Semester to Remember
By: Cristina Stancescu
Before coming to Barcelona with CIEE, I had high expectations, but this city has completely exceeded them. From the moment I landed, I was captivated by its vibrant streets, rich culture, and the perfect balance of city life and coastal relaxation. Studying abroad here has been a whirlwind of adventure, learning, and personal growth.
Barcelona’s diverse neighborhoods each offer something unique to discover. Living in the quiet neighborhood of Poblenou, I have easy access to the beach, and walking along the sand has become a daily ritual I cherish. In between classes, I love wandering through the Gothic Quarter, getting lost in its medieval alleyways, or shopping along Passeig de Gràcia where there’s always something new to explore around every corner.
One of the most exciting aspects of life in Barcelona has been adjusting to the Spanish and Catalan customs. Late dinners, long conversations, and the emphasis on taking time to enjoy each other's company. One of my favorite memories from my first week was eating the best Patatas Bravas at Taller de Tapas and sitting down for hours just talking with my friends. It’s been refreshing to slow down and appreciate the little things, and it’s a mindset I know I’ll take home with me.
Additionally, Barcelona is packed with incredible places to explore. I’ve spent countless afternoons in Parc de la Ciutadella, enjoying the greenery and the peaceful atmosphere. The views from Bunkers del Carmel at sunset are unforgettable, and the amazing rooftops are perfect for enjoying tapas and cava while marveling at the architectural wonders of the city. I highly recommend checking out the terrace of Sercotel Rosellón, where you’ll be treated to an amazing view of the Sagrada Familia, or Hotel Colon in the Gothic Quarter for one of the most picturesque sunsets against the Barcelona Cathedral.
Beyond Barcelona, I’ve taken trips to places in Spain like Sitges, Madrid, and Montserrat. Traveling within Spain is easy and affordable, making it possible to experience so much more than just one city. Whether it’s the serenity of the mountains, the coastal beauty of Sitges, or the historic charm of Madrid, each destination has added to my love for Spain.
If you’re thinking about studying abroad in Barcelona, my biggest advice is to dive in headfirst. Learn some Spanish and Catalan, embrace the culture, and don’t be afraid to try new things. Take advantage of CIEE’s resources and events. They offer great opportunities to connect with the city, meet locals, and learn the customs in a deeper way. One of my first few days in the city, I did a tour of the Gothic Quarters through CIEE and learned about the rich culture and history that lies in the old town of Barcelona.
Overall, be present. This experience goes by faster than you expect, and every moment here is an opportunity to learn, grow, and create memories that will last a lifetime. As my time in Barcelona is coming to an end, I realize how much I’ve grown and become more independent, curious, and appreciative of new experiences. This city has truly left a mark on me, and I know my passion for Barcelona will stay with me long after I leave.
