My Time in Barcelona
By: Abby Anokye-Agyei
My time in Barcelona, Spain, has been absolutely incredible. I’ve had the chance to experience some of the best food, architecture, and culture I’ve ever encountered. Throughout my time here, I’ve grown both as a student and as a person in more ways than I can count. Navigating cultural differences and balancing travel with school has been both challenging and rewarding.
Some of my favorite experiences in Spain have been the highlights of my time abroad. One of the first was the CIEE trip to Tarragona. This was my first day trip in Spain, and I went “solo” without the close friends I had made in the past few weeks. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I made because I met so many new people in the program. We took a guided tour of the city and learned about Tarragona’s deep history. My favorite part was seeing the Amphitheater and learning about its historical significance. The city had such a unique past and stunning sights.
Another favorite trip was my weekend in Seville. The city was absolutely beautiful, rich with history, and full of influences from Spain’s three historical cultures. I was especially drawn to the Muslim influence in the architecture, which I loved seeing. During my visit, I explored the Seville Cathedral and the Royal Alcázar, and I even tried the famous churros con chocolate for the first time.
Lastly, my time in Barcelona itself has been unforgettable. Thanks to CIEE, I’ve had the opportunity to do so many amazing activities, from visiting Park Güell to touring the Gothic Quarter. I’ve met incredible people from all over, and being here has not only allowed me to experience Spain but also travel throughout Europe. I couldn’t have asked for a better program to help me grow both academically and personally.
