How Studying Abroad Changed My Life
By: Mackenzie Murphy
Moving abroad was always a dream of mine. I spent years researching programs, carefully choosing a school with a strong study abroad program and looking forward to this adventure since high school. But when the time finally came to pack my bags and go, fear set in. I was nervous—nervous about the unknown, the language barrier, the long travel day, and being in a new country without friends or family.
From the very beginning, CIEE eased my nerves. Their detailed guidance and step-by-step processes ensured I felt prepared for the transition. While saying goodbye to my family was tough, my excitement for the next four months outweighed my fears. Little did I know, this experience would change my life forever.
Barcelona quickly became my home. The city is vibrant, full of life, and packed with things to do. I've learned so much—not just about Spain’s history and culture, but also from the local students I’ve met along the way. One of the biggest perks of studying in Europe is the ease of travel, and I took full advantage of it. From the northern lights in Tromsø to the fashion capital of Milan, from the breathtaking landscapes of Switzerland to the historic streets of London and Budapest, each destination expanded my worldview, strengthened my independence, and introduced me to incredible people from all walks of life.
More than anything, studying abroad has taught me to slow down and appreciate the little things. Back home in the U.S., life often feels fast paced and rushed. But in Spain, I’ve learned to take a step back—to admire the beauty of architecture, savor the details in artwork, immerse myself in nature, and truly value the relationships I’ve built. I’ve experienced things I never imagined possible, and I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for every moment.
The memories I’ve made with CIEE will stay with me forever. If you're a student considering studying abroad, take the leap. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will challenge you, inspire you, and change you in ways you never expected.
