How Study Abroad Transformed the Way I See the World
By: Ryan Schwartz
My CIEE study abroad program in Barcelona ended just last week, but I already wish I could have the time back. I first arrived in Barcelona on January 2nd of 2025. Now, almost 4 months later, I can confidently say that it has changed the way I interact with others, the way I see the world, and the way I see myself – all for the better.
Despite all of this, the initial adjustment was exceedingly difficult. Dropping into a new place with a new language and culture can be scary, but it is important to remember that you are not alone. Having this experience through a program like CIEE allows you to connect with others in the same position as yourself and makes the transition as seamless as possible.
The course schedules allow for flexibility weekends where you can travel all over Europe or even further. Some of my favorite trips were to Lisbon, Amsterdam, and Budapest. Traveling with friends is incredibly fun, but I highly recommend spending at least one weekend going on a solo trip. It may sound threatening, but it helps push your limits and develop essential skills like resourcefulness and outward sociability. I decided to go to Edinburgh, Scotland by myself and I met so many interesting people. Traveling by yourself allows for a greater immersion with the city and the locals.
While traveling is endlessly entertaining, there is still so much to explore and see in Barcelona. For starters, anyone studying here must go to at least one FC Barcelona match, even if you are not a fan of European Football. Though they are not currently playing in the legendary Camp Nou stadium, the temporary home stadium is beautiful and historic in its own right. I went to the match against Dortmund in the UCL Quarterfinals and the atmosphere was completely electric. It also helps that this is arguably the best squad they have had since Messi left. Beyond sports, Barcelona is home to a variety of renowned architectural and religious sites that attract tourists from all over. Just to name a few, I loved my visits to La Sagrada Familia, Park Guell, and Ciutadella Park. Lastly, the diverse cuisine is so incredible, I will never be able to put it into enough words.
I could go on forever about all the things to do, but I will leave the rest for you to experience yourself. I cannot stress enough that studying abroad is something that all students should sign up for, if possible. Everyone’s time here is unique and extraordinary, but the one thing they all have in common is that it is transformational. Good luck and have fun!
