Overview

Twelve (12) students will be selected for an eight-week summer internship in Dublin, Ireland, where they will gain real-world experience while deepening their understanding of Irish history and culture. Honoring the shared history of social reform leaders Frederick Douglass and Daniel O'Connell, the program supports students from diverse backgrounds in preparing for future career success.

During this specialized program, Douglass-O’Connell Global Interns will spend June 16 to August 9, 2027 attending lectures on the history of social change in Ireland, participating in networking and extracurricular activities, and interning with a host company aligned with their skills and career goals.

Students seeking a rich international internship that combines real-world work experience in Ireland with an exciting overview of Irish history and culture are encouraged to apply.

All eligible applicants

will receive a Douglass-O'Connell Scholars Grant that they may use for any CIEE summer or semester program through summer 2028.

  • Visit Glasnevin Cemetery and Museum, including a visit to the Daniel O’Connell Monument and his final resting place  
  • Journey to Northern Ireland and visit the Peace Wall, Frederick Douglass Mural, and Frederick Douglass statue in Belfast
  • Walk in the footsteps of 6th-century monks at Glendalough, an ancient monastic settlement nestled in a spectacular valley in the Wicklow Mountains

Students will also explore the legacies of Frederick Douglass and Daniel O’Connell as successful businessmen and leaders of social change.

Co-sponsored by CIEE, Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs, the African American Irish Diaspora Network (AAIDN), and the John & Lillian Miles Lewis Foundation, the program is named for Frederick Douglass' 1845 visit to Ireland, where he was welcomed by the Irish public and met Irish reformer Daniel O'Connell. Honoring this shared history of social reform, the program supports students from diverse backgrounds in preparing for future career success.

Course Information

The 2027 Douglass-O’Connell Global Interns will take a 6-credit academic internship and seminar while on the program. Students will also explore the legacies of Frederick Douglass and Daniel O’Connell as successful businessmen and leaders of social change. In addition to this course, Douglass-O’Connell Global Interns will participate in a fully immersive internship at an Irish organization.
