Spend your summer studying abroad in one of the most diverse countries on the planet: Morocco! Designed for students who want to improve their Arabic language skills, the Summer Moroccan Studies program will immerse you in Morocco's rich culture and give you greater insight into present-day Moroccan society.

When class is in session at CIEE Rabat, you'll explore how Amazigh, Arab, French, Spanish, and North and West African influences have helped form Morocco's identity and contributed to its diversity. Outside the classroom, you'll have plenty of time to admire Hassan Tower, explore the Chellah Necropolis, and wander through Rabat's Medina district.

All your courses will be taught in English and complemented with immersive co-curricular activities and excursions to increase your understanding of Morocco's rich culture.

Morocco’s capital and second-largest city, Rabat has a population of 3 million. It’s home to the country’s most prestigious universities, as well as international institutions and World Heritage Sites. Rabat has a wide range of opportunities for students to experience its culture - think art exhibits, music, and theater. Walk central Rabat on your off-hours and explore its palm tree-lined boulevards, cafés, restaurants, and shopping centers.

CIEE wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local CIEE staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Rabat.

  • HOUSING

    Homestays: Live with an Arabic or French-speaking family in a modern or traditional home in a Rabat neighborhood or in the outskirts of the city. Families are carefully selected by local CIEE staff members and matched carefully, according to student preferences. Most homes combine Western and traditional Moroccan elements, and families are typically multilingual. Internet provided. Commute via public transportation or taxi.

    Homestays: Families provide breakfast and dinner on weekdays and weekends.

Academics

The Summer Moroccan Studies program is designed to provide students with a multifaceted academic analysis of Moroccan culture and history. Discuss the factors of Moroccan identity and the major issues of contemporary Moroccan society or examine the recent social and political changes in the Middle East and North Africa region. Students can also opt to learn colloquial Moroccan Arabic, making it easier to connect with the people of Morocco and learn about their way of life. In-class work is augmented with co-curricular visits to the city’s rich variety of cultural institutions and organizations relevant to the course offerings. 

Courses are taught by faculty from local and international institutions. Language courses are taught by language instructors from local universities and other organizations. 

CIEE Rabat is located in the prominent neighborhood of Agdal in central Rabat, with easy access to public transportation.

Students enroll in one required course. 

Program Credit

Total credit: 3–4 U.S. semester/4.5-6 quarter hours per session 

Course Credit

CIEE courses: 1-3 U.S. semester/1.5–4.5 quarter credits; 15-45 contact hours

Academic Culture

Teaching methods involve a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, and fieldwork. Guest lectures and excursions are also an important part of the curriculum.

Classes are for CIEE students only. 

Grading

Grades are based on quizzes, exams, individual and group presentations, research projects, and papers, following a standard A-F grading scale.

  • Students may enroll in the Communicative Moroccan Colloquial Arabic Language class during one session.

To help you budget, keep in mind that students are responsible for the cost of international airfare, local transportation, books and supplies, visas, and personal expenses. In addition, your college or university may charge additional fees for study abroad, or may require you to receive a transcript via CIEE's School of Record, which carries an additional fee of $500.
