Academic Culture

The academic environment at CIEE offers a focused and immersive experience for students, blending rigorous coursework with hands-on learning opportunities to deepen understanding of both academic subjects and the local culture. In addition to lectures, CIEE courses often incorporate local field trips and co-curricular activities, providing students with firsthand exposure to the rich cultural heritage and diverse landscapes. These experiences not only enhance academic learning but also foster a deeper appreciation and understanding of the local context. Attendance is considered mandatory in CIEE courses, with absences impacting final grades. This emphasizes the importance of active participation and engagement in the learning process, encouraging students to fully commit to their academic pursuits.

Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore offers two different curricula of study with a wide variety of courses available to international students.  The “International Curriculum” (in English) is mostly with international students. The “Academic Curriculum” (regular courses in English or in Italian) is mostly with Italian students.

Arizona State University: Most ASU online courses are asynchronous. You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. You’ll receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online.

Class Format

CIEE courses are scheduled Monday through Thursday. Students should expect to have daily homework assignments and continuous assessments. Most courses combine lectures with local field trips and excursions to help students gain a better understanding of the local culture. Attendance in class is mandatory and absences affect final grades.

Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore classes are typically scheduled Monday through Friday. Attendance is often required and participation in class is expected. Exams take place at the end of the trimester.

ASU online courses meet in “sessions” that are 7.5-weeks long in the semester, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other CIEE courses begin or end.

Grading

CIEE reports all final course grades to students’ home institutions using a U.S. letter grade equivalent scale of A-F. For CIEE-administered courses, students’ grades are based on class engagement, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi.

At Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, students are typically graded on a midterm, a final exam, and class participation. Attendance to class is required, and absences affect final grades.

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person. “Pass/fail” or “Audit” is not allowed for CIEE students.

Individual courses may have additional prerequisites; for CIEE courses, these are listed in the syllabi below.
