Your CIEE Summer Intern + Study Abroad program in Legon combines hands-on professional experience with academic study in Ghana’s leading university community. This program includes three components: A part-time internship with an international organization (15-20 hours per week), an internship seminar, and a 3‑credit academic course taught online through CIEE’s global academic partner, ASU. Beyond the workplace and classroom, the experience is complemented by co-curricular and extracurricular activities such as visiting Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, exploring the crafts, art, and cultural displays at the Arts Centre for National Culture, and discovering the dramatic landscapes and wildlife of Shai Hills Resource Reserve. Together, these experiences foster meaningful cultural engagement while helping you develop valuable professional skills in an international setting.

Housing & Meals

Housing

CIEE Legon offers diverse housing options to ensure you’re comfortable in your home away from home, which include homestays or off-campus hostels/apartments. All housing is located on and around the Legon campus environs, with convenient access to downtown Accra (roughly 45 minutes) but closer to CIEE Legon on campus (10 to 40 minutes).    

Standard Housing: Includes a single/double room at a homestay or a quad/triple room at an off-campus hostel located under 45 minutes from CIEE Legon. Homestays boast a kitchen, living room, and bathroom shared with a host family. The off-campus hostels offers triple or quad-occupancy en-suite rooms, with shared common spaces such as a fitted kitchen and a lounging area.  

Select Plus Housing: Includes a single-occupancy air-conditioned room in apartment-style housing off-campus, located within 20 minutes from CIEE Legon. (Estimate an additional 15-30 minutes commute time when traffic is heavy or there is difficulty in getting public transport.)    

Select Plus housing requires an additional fee. 

A note: The default criterion to assign housing is first-come, first-served; however, other factors may also be considered. If we cannot accommodate your first housing choice, we'll let you know before you arrive. Non-standard housing options require an additional fee that can be found in the program Dates and Fees. 

Meals

Homestays: Students have breakfast and dinner with their host families, and they are responsible for lunch. Hosts provide all three meals on weekends.   
Off-Campus Hostels/Apartments: Meals are not included. Students prepare meals (facilities are limited) or eat off campus. Students will be provided with basic cooking utensils and a hot plate to prepare their own meals.

Academics

CIEE Legon: Study on the University of Ghana’s campus, located in the quiet suburbs of Accra. CIEE Legon features three main classrooms, a general space that can also serve as a large classroom, a modest library, a lounge area for relaxation, and a vast outdoor space (with a mini football field and a basketball court).

Arizona State University (ASU): Brought to you by CIEE in partnership with ASU, enhance your international coursework with online classes that align with your degree requirements. ASU offers thousands of online courses in asynchronous 6-week sessions that fit within the CIEE academic calendar.

Academic Culture

CIEE offers a focused and immersive experience for students, blending rigorous coursework with hands-on learning opportunities to deepen understanding of both academic subjects and the local culture.  

CIEE courses typically run from Monday through Thursday, providing students with a concentrated schedule that allows for intensive study and exploration. This condensed format encourages students to fully engage with the material and make the most of their time.  

In addition to lectures, CIEE courses often incorporate local co-curricular activities, providing students with firsthand exposure to the rich cultural heritage and diverse landscapes. These experiences not only enhance academic learning but also foster a deeper appreciation and understanding of the local context.  

The required internship seminar features both in-person sessions and online asynchronous activities. This condensed format provides students with a concentrated schedule that accommodates study and internship workplace schedules. It also encourages students to fully engage with the material and make the most of their time in Legon.  

Attendance is mandatory in CIEE courses. This emphasizes the importance of active participation and engagement in the learning process, encouraging students to fully commit to their academic pursuits. 

Arizona State University: Most ASU online courses are asynchronous. You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. You’ll receive direct and individualized support from ASU faculty, 100% online. 

Class Format

Students participate in a six-week CIEE part-time in-person internship and academic course featuring both in-person class sessions and online asynchronous work. Class sessions, co-curricular excursions, and work hours may be scheduled Monday through Friday, and attendance is strictly enforced for all. To avoid falling behind, students should not plan personal travel away from the city during the work week.   

ASU online courses meet in “sessions” that are 6-weeks long in the semester, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other CIEE courses begin or end. 

Grading

CIEE reports all final course grades to students’ home institutions using a U.S. letter grade equivalent scale of A-F. For CIEE-administered courses, students’ grades are based on attendance, class engagement, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi. The embedded internship course will be assessed in assignments and activities, completion of 100-120 internship hours, and feedback from the internship supervisor.  

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person. “Pass/fail” or “Audit” is not allowed for CIEE students. 

Individual courses may have additional prerequisites; for CIEE courses, these are listed in the syllabi below. Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors. Your study abroad advisor and CIEE staff can help you understand your course options if you don't see a recommendation that fits your course needs.

To help you budget, keep in mind that students are responsible for the cost of international airfare, local transportation, books and supplies, visas, and personal expenses. In addition, your college or university may charge additional fees for study abroad, or may require you to receive a transcript via CIEE's School of Record, which carries an additional fee of $500.
