Overview

Spend a full semester studying business and technology in Estonia’s thriving capital and booming tech scene, Tallinn! Dubbed the “Silicon Valley of Europe,” Tallinn is nearly 100% digital and beckons budding entrepreneurs and tech students to flock here to discover the city’s commitment to digital innovation.

When class is in session, you’ll study at Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech) – an institution at the forefront of digital innovation that’s leading Estonia toward a sustainable digital future – alongside international and local Estonian students. You can choose to register for courses in English across academic disciplines like technology, information technology, applied science, business, and maritime studies.

Outside the classroom, you’ll have every opportunity to participate in exciting day trips, overnight excursions, and cultural immersion opportunities to increase your engagement with the local community and explore all Tallinn has to offer.

Your Destination

Situated on the border of Russia and only a short ferry ride away from Finland, Estonia is an incredible Baltic nation known for being a member of the European Union, Eurozone, and NATO. The country boasts a thriving democracy and is highly developed, with exceptionally advanced digital infrastructure in place.

Estonia’s cultural hub, Tallinn, will be your backdrop while studying abroad in northeastern Europe. Historic gates, defensive towers, cobblestone streets, hilltop castles, and beautiful cathedrals all contribute to Tallinn – also known as the “Gem of the Baltic” – being recognized as one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval cities. Today, Tallinn is not only famed for being Estonia’s capital and largest city; it’s also renowned for being the “Silicon Valley of Europe,” as the city is nearly 100% digital.

From Estonia’s 18 exceptional universities – 10 of which teach programs in English – to CIEE’s established partnership with the Tallinn University of Technology (a highly ranked institution known worldwide for its Science & Technology faculty), you’ll have ample opportunities to study emerging academic topics including cyber and energy security, environmental science, entrepreneurship, as well Baltic languages and culture, Russian language, and international public diplomacy.

CIEE wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local CIEE staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Tallinn.

Creators of digital innovations, Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech) is leading Estonia and the world toward a sustainable digital future with confidence. As a leader in science, technology, and innovation, the school maintains constant interaction with universities around the world, bringing together scientists, students, and entrepreneurs. TalTech is also the most international university in Estonia. Of the nearly 10,000 enrolled students, approximately 16% come from more than 100 different countries across the globe.

The university-wide initiative, TalTechDigital, implements new digital solutions for the entire university campus. The Smart City Centre of Excellence, established in 2020, brings the top expertise in smart urban space solutions to TalTech and makes the university’s compact and beautiful campus one of the smartest in the world.

Founded in 1918, TalTech is the only technological university in Estonia. It is a research-based university offering bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees in technology, applied science, information technology, business, and maritime studies. Renewed study programs targeting the labor market needs to make TalTech graduates more marketable.

TalTech strengths include STEM and business areas of study. Focus is placed not only on the theoretical field of STEM but also on putting this knowledge into practice and into business, like startups.

Fall classes at TalTech end in December and official exams can take place in January. Spring classes at TalTech end in May and official exams can take place in early June. Early exams may be possible but must be confirmed on an individual basis with the professor of each course. Students may be able to take their exams early, though only if they request it at the start of the semester. Housing will be covered until all exams are completed. However, as it is impossible to confirm exam schedules prior to arrival, we advise students who wish to take their exams early to book an airline ticket with a low change fee or a flexible departure date.
