Students notice striking differences in the British model, which is less structured and requires students to take more responsibility and initiative. The CIEE staff supports students as they adapt to this new style. Students take a series of lecture courses, which may include seminars, tutorials, and labs. Students are expected to prepare in advance for seminars and tutorials by researching topics for discussion, writing essays, or solving problems. Students spend at least as much time studying as they spend in class. Each study abroad student has a UCL tutor for support. Students participating in the U.S. spring semester must attend UCL for spring and summer terms, and there is a four-week break between terms.
Students take UCL classes with British students as well as other CIEE and international students.
Assessment varies by course and department. Where possible, students are assessed in the same manner as their UCL peers. Academic year and spring semester students take the year-end exam during the UCL summer term. Fall semester students are assessed with a special exam or end of term paper.
