Location & Culture

Click to Open

Monteverde is a small, international community, nestled along the edge of the cloud forest in the Tilarán Mountains.  Drawn to the area’s spectacular beauty and opportunities to see quetzals and monkeys, tourists now contribute the principal revenues to the zone, although coffee plantations and dairy farms still dot the landscape.  This area is famous as an epicenter for grassroots conservation and private reserves, and the community is emerging as the vanguard of innovation for Costa Rica’s carbon neutrality program.

The Culture

EXCURSIONS & ACTIVITIES

  • Explore a steamy Atlantic-slope rain forest, where inhabitants include white-crowned parrots, two-toed sloths, coatimundi, white-faced monkeys, and more.
  • Marvel at the diversity of a tropical dry forest, rare and endangered, and so vibrant with life.
  • See towering Arenal volcano.  Dormant for some time, the surrounding park is home to some 850 species of birds and more.

RESEARCH

Put your skills to work on an independent research project in tropic ecology or conservation, from observation to a presentation of your findings. At every step, you’ll be guided by an expert faculty advisor. Past projects have explored beetle habitats, hummingbird habits, and the prey of cane toads.
