Known as Australia’s sunniest and most environmentally attractive city, cosmopolitan Perth is sophistication with a laid-back vibe. Suburban Murdoch University – home to CIEE – is 11 miles south of Perth and 6 miles east of Fremantle, a.k.a Freo. This funky port city is where you’ll find most students outside of class. With an alternative vibe, this city leads many green initiatives in Western Australia, and has a lively arts and music scene. The towns of Coral Bay and Exmouth are on the Indian Ocean about 745 miles north of Perth, on the doorstep of Ningaloo Marine Park. The world-famous reef and surrounding region brims with dolphins, dugongs, manta ray, sea turtles, mollusks, whales, whale sharks, coral, and colorful fish.

What you need to know

The program details

CIEE’s Summer Tropical Marine Ecology program invites biology, conservation, marine biology, and science students with at least two completed semesters of college-level biology to gain hands-on experience through fieldwork in Australia’s incredible natural environment. All students take two required courses: Marine Ecology Research Methods and Marine Biology and Ecology of Western Australia. In-class work is augmented with co-curricular visits to the city’s rich variety of cultural institutions and organizations relevant to the course offerings.

CIEE Perth is conveniently located within the campus of Murdoch University in suburban Perth. Coined “Quantas Lounge” by CIEE staff, the center has lounge space for students to do homework, relax, and interact with fellow students and staff.

Students take all classes with only CIEE students.

Assessment is based on a group presentation, individual field report, short answer test, and an e-portfolio of reflections and learning.

Local instructors’ expectations are similar to U.S. academic expectations with respect to punctuality and timeliness of completed assessments. Although, Australian academic staff expect students to be more self-sufficient learning the course material. Typically, as this course has field-studies components, there is less contact time in class. Students are expected to spend the same amount of contact hours in co-curricular activities and sufficient time self-learning and reviewing course content. There are also fewer assessment pieces, so there is a heavier weighting per assessment piece. Students need to plan their time well with respect to academic requirements while on this program.

Students need to have a GPA of at least 2.5

2 semesters of college-level biology; Upper-level ecology coursework recommended
