The program details

This intensive, eight-week summer program is dedicated to Spanish language acquisition through classroom instruction combined with cultural and community activities. Students complete 15 hours of class per week, taught entirely in Spanish, addressing all communicational and cultural components. Students are divided into four different language level groups according to an online and on-site all-encompassing placement test.

All courses are taught by CIEE Faculty at CIEE’s Global Institute - an urban campus where all students agree to speak only Spanish to foster language proficiency and cultural understanding.

Academics

  • CLASS FORMAT

Courses are taught in Spanish by the CIEE Spanish department faculty at the CIEE Global Institute and are for CIEE students only. Classes are scheduled Monday-Friday and meet five times per week. Attendance is strictly enforced for both classes and required co-curricular excursions. Students should expect an average of two hours of preparation required for each hour in class. Instruction is supported and augmented online by our Canvas e-learning platform.

  • GRADING

The U.S. grading scale of A-F is used. Students’ grades are based on attendance, class participation, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm, and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi.

  • ACADEMIC CULTURE

The pace of this intensive program is accelerated, and the workload is demanding. CIEE courses follow U.S. academic culture and standards. The class environment typically features a combination of traditional lecture and discussion with co-curricular excursions and activities. Special focus is paid on experiential learning and outside-classroom activities to best develop Spanish language competence. Heavy emphasis is placed on student participation. Teaching methods will be familiar to U.S. students who have studied foreign language. Instructors are experienced in second language instruction, and there are staff and resources to help students navigate academic cultural differences.
