Top 5 Events That Make Fall the Best Semester to Study in Germany
Every season in Berlin has it's own unique benefits for locals and for those studying abroad... but Fall Semester is easily my favorite. Want to know why? Then check out these five events happening in Berlin this Fall Semester that could make it the perfect experience for you while studying abroad:
1. 29th August: Long Night of the Museums
Have you ever wondered what a night at the museum looks like? Well now is your chance! From 6pm to 2am, 75 of Berlin's biggest museums will be open for special events, themed tours, and more on this special event. A great way to see out the Summer, going from the warm outdoors to the cool interior and discovering as much history and culture as you can pack into one night. I for one can't wait to be terrified by the site of Otto von Tristran, our local T.Rex, in the dark at the natural history museum!
2. 12th September: Open Day at the Berlin State Opera and Festival of Giant Kites
Two for one! If you are interested in seeing some of the worlds most beautifully performed operas and ballets for free, then head to the State Opera at Unter den Linden. Germany is the home of many brilliant composers and performers (alive and dead!), and it is a great way to dive into the rich heritage of the country.
And then of course, there are the giant kites! Every year at the airfield turned public park, Templehofer Feld, enthusiasts from across the world fly gorgeous designs up to 120 feet long across the park. Thanks to Berlin low skyline, you can spot them from miles away!
3. 3rd - 12th October: Berlin Club Culture Week
Berlin's club culture and nightlife is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage site as a foundational part of Berlin as a city, and one many enjoy experiencing while studying abroad. There is even now an entire week dedicated to the many musical genres and amazing artists who have been inspired by the city. If you enjoy moving your feet to music from across the world, these will be evenings to remember.
4. 12th - 22nd November: Jewish Cultural Days
The Jewish Cultural Days offer an insight into the diversity of Jewish culture, which has been a prevalent part of the landscapes of Berlin and Germany for centuries. With jazz, soul, pop, rock, world music, synagogue music, classical music, comics, literature, lectures, public religious services, and a large festival, the festival days also offer non-Jewish visitors the opportunity to experience Jewish life.
5. December: German Christmas Markets
It is far too difficult to say any one Christmas market is better than the other... but Germany is easily a contender for 1st place. Whether it be across the many neighborhoods of Berlin, the beautiful southern cities of Munich or Nuremburg, or on the coast at Rostock, the atmosphere at German Christmas markets is unbeatable: as are their excellent hot chocolates to keep you warm in the snow!
So why study abroad in Germany this fall? We think it is an easy question, and there is so much more than what is here to explore!
