Semester in Barcelona

By: Addison Paquin

Spending a semester abroad in Barcelona was one of the most impactful and exciting experiences of my college journey. Between five fascinating classes, weekend adventures across Europe, and discovering all the best spots around the city, I came home with a broadened perspective and unforgettable memories.

Academics in Action

One of the most enriching aspects of my time abroad was the opportunity to take classes that connected directly with the culture and history around me. I took five courses that each added a unique lens to my experience:

  • Catalonia and Spain Through the Arts: From Picasso to Miró, this class helped me see the city’s art not just as decoration, but as storytelling and identity.
  • Spain Today: Politics and Society: This course provided insight into current events and deeper social dynamics, including the complexity of Catalonia’s push for independence.
  • Past and Present in Barcelona: Walking through the Gothic Quarter meant even more after learning how the city evolved through centuries.
  • Intercultural Communication and Leadership: Living abroad while learning how culture shapes communication was incredibly eye-opening.
  • Strategic Management: This class grounded me in business thinking and helped me apply what I’ve learned back at home to an international context.

Weekend Adventures

One of the biggest perks of being in Europe is how easy it is to travel. Each weekend felt like a new adventure, and I tried to take full advantage of it.

Here's where I explored:

  • Mallorca –  Beautiful beaches and stunning landscapes. This Mediterranean Island was the perfect beach escape. From cliffside coves to charming towns like Sóller and Valldemossa, Mallorca felt like something out of a postcard. I hiked, swam in crystal-clear water, and enjoyed the slow, sunny pace of island life.
  • Madrid –  Madrid was vibrant and full of life. I visited the Royal Palace, strolled through El Retiro Park, and explored world-famous museums like the Prado. It was a great contrast to Barcelona—less beachy, more regal—with its own energy and elegance.
  • Budapest –  This city blew me away. The architecture was stunning, especially along the Danube River at night. I spent time at the Széchenyi thermal baths, walked across the Chain Bridge, and hiked up to Fisherman's Bastion for some of the best views I’ve ever seen. It felt like a hidden gem in Europe.
  • Milan + Lake Como – Fashion meets natural beauty. Milan was a quick stop, but seeing the Duomo in person was unforgettable. Then came Lake Como, which felt like a dream. I took a boat ride across the lake, explored the picturesque town of Bellagio, and soaked in the views of the mountains meeting the water. It was peaceful, elegant, and almost surreal.
  • Paris –  Everything you imagine it to be and more. Paris was every bit as magical as I hoped. I spent a whole day walking around with no set agenda; just the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Seine, and as many croissants as I could find. Seeing the city lit up at night made me understand why it’s called the City of Light.
  • Malta –  An island full of history and sunshine. Malta was one of the most unique places I visited: I loved it so much I went twice! The island is small but packed with history. I explored ancient temples, swam in the Blue Lagoon, went cliff jumping, and admired the colorful balconies in Valletta. It was sunny, vibrant, and had a culture all its own.
  • Amsterdam –I loved biking along the canals, exploring the Van Gogh Museum, and walking through Jordaan’s flower-lined streets. Every corner of the city felt peaceful and picture-perfect.
  • Tenerife –  Tenerife felt like another world. I visited Mount Teide, Spain’s highest peak, and explored black-sand beaches. It was the perfect mix of nature, relaxation, and adventure: ideal for resetting before finals.
