From Snow to Sand: 5 Moments That Shaped My Study Abroad Experience
By: Marissa Garcia
When I first arrived in Barcelona, I didn’t know just how much I would grow—not just professionally through my internship, but personally through the moments in between. I knew I wanted to challenge myself, explore Europe, and soak in the culture. What I didn’t expect were the moments of peace, joy, and confidence that would show up in the most unexpected places. These five moments, captured in photos, tell the story of how this journey changed me.
Finding Confidence in the Alps
Snowboarding in Zermatt with the Matterhorn in the background was surreal. I had never experienced anything like it—steep slopes, freezing winds, and breathtaking views. I was nervous at first, but the thrill of trying something new reminded me that growth comes from discomfort. Every fall was part of the process, and each time I got back up, I felt a little more confident—not just on the board, but in myself.
Slowing Down in Barcelona
One of my favorite things to do was find quiet places to take in the view. Sitting above the city reminded me to pause and reflect. Life in Barcelona moved at a different pace—more relaxed, more present. This shift taught me to appreciate moments of stillness. In between work at my internship and weekend trips, this became my place to reset and reconnect with my goals.
Celebrating Spontaneity in Paris
The heart balloons were a last-minute idea. My friends and I spent the evening at the Eiffel Tower, laughing, posing, and being unapologetically in the moment. It was light, joyful, and exactly what I needed. Studying abroad isn’t just about academics or cultural sites—it’s also about celebrating life and creating memories that feel like magic.
Reflecting in the Sahara
I never imagined myself in the middle of the Sahara Desert, but there I was—barefoot in the sand, watching the sun dip below the dunes. Everything felt quiet and endless. That silence gave me space to think about who I’m becoming and what matters to me. It was humbling, beautiful, and reminded me how small moments in vast places can leave the biggest impact.
Feeling Inspired at the Louvre
Sitting outside the Louvre, surrounded by centuries of art and architecture, I felt both small and empowered. I thought about the people who once stood where I was—creatives, thinkers, and travelers—and how they followed their paths. That moment made me reflect on my own journey and the kind of career I want to build. My time abroad confirmed my goal of becoming a real estate attorney and pursuing work that connects people and places across borders.
Final Thoughts
This blog could easily be filled with lists of places I visited or food I tried—but for me, the real story is in the lessons I took home. From snow-covered mountains to golden deserts, every moment taught me something. I came to Barcelona to grow professionally through my internship at IPTW, but I’m leaving with so much more: perspective, confidence, and the drive to keep learning from every corner of the world.
