Semester in Rome

By: Ryan O'Dell

Studying abroad in Rome over the past few months has been an incredible experience. I had an idea of what life would be like abroad after watching my older siblings experience it; however, I had no idea what it would be like to live it. Living in the heart of Italy, surrounded by ancient structures, ruins, and delicious food, I have experienced so much more than I ever thought I would. The food in Rome was unbelievable. My favorite part of going to restaurants for dinner was that I rarely had to look up recommendations, you could walk into any of them and have an amazing meal. Walking through the tight alleyways of central Rome and turning the corner to see something as grand as the Pantheon or the Trevi Fountain always gave you a unique feeling of surprise and beauty. It was a very walkable city full of history which is something I learned to appreciate after traveling to other European countries.

One of the most incredible parts of studying abroad has been the chance to explore beyond Rome. Each weekend I got to go on the type of vacation that I would do once a year back home. One of the highlights was skiing in Grindelwald, Switzerland. Staying in a hostel at the top of the mountain and waking up to the sunrise over some of the tallest mountains in Europe is something I will never forget. Back in Italy, I hiked the Path of the Gods along the Amalfi Coast, a trail with some great views of the coastal mountains as well as Positano.  The combination of sea cliffs, tiny villages, and ocean made it one of my favorite experiences. Later, I ventured to Sardinia, where I took on even more hikes through rugged terrain that opened up to hidden coves and bright blue waters.

Each destination allowed me to experience new cultures, languages, and meet people from all over the world. I have definitely grown in ways that only traveling and truly immersing yourself in other cultures can provide. As I prepare to head home, I know these memories will stay with me. I had many personable and fun professors in Rome who made the experience that much better. I am very thankful for the time I spent in Rome and my travels while abroad.
