J-term is a Unique Time to Explore Child Development in Madrid
January is a special time in Madrid for children and families. Each awaits one of the most important celebrations of the year – the arrival of the Three Kings who bring gifts to children on the eve of January 6!
Spend J-term in Madrid and see firsthand the exuberant and colorful Three Kings parade in the city center with fireworks, giant floats, and lots of candy. It’s the perfect introduction into a culturally rooted family tradition that has a big impact on the psychological development of Spanish children – and the perfect introduction to our three-week, three-credit program, Family, School, and Child Development.
Students across academic interests, including STEM, healthcare, education, social work, business, and economic development, will gain insight into the Spanish approach to ensuring children grow up healthy and have opportunities to become contributing members of society. Get an in-depth look at family life in Spanish communities, see how the Spanish educational system approaches challenges, explore family patterns, and public policy for family welfare. Site visits to different Spanish institutions, such as a local primary school, will deepen your theoretical learning about child development.
Outside of the class, take in all that Madrid has to offer! Tapas, museums, soccer, and flamenco are just a taste of things to do in Spain´s energetic capital city. And if you’ve never thought “outdoor hiking” or “winter sports” when picturing Madrid, think again! Just north of the city is a wonderful national park reserve, the Guadarrama, which is surrounded by snow-covered mountains ideal for skiing. You can also explore the mountain range via snow boots and take guided tours through the enchanting woods while on the lookout for eagles, vultures, deer, foxes, bulls, and other mountain wildlife.
J-term in Madrid promises an exciting and memorable way to spend winter break! Earn credits, explore child development, and immerse yourself in Spain’s warm, passionate culture.
