Finding Home in Rome
By: Lisa Msuya
When deciding what study abroad program I would pursue, as soon as I saw Rome, Italy, I knew immediately that it would be the place for me, but it’s not only the place but the program as well. Hey y’all! My name is Lisa Msuya and I am a junior from UW-Madison majoring in Biology with certifications in Global Health and Global Cultures, Languages, and Education. I initially had reservations about studying abroad but can already say with total confidence that it is one of the best decisions I have made.
CIEE has created an experience for students to fully immerse themselves in Italian culture while working towards one’s academic goals. For myself, traveling as a pre-medical student is especially difficult but in my short two blocks here I am able to complete my global health certification.
CIEE also provides a variation of free activities throughout the week to participate in as a way to explore the city and all it has to offer as well as meet new people. My personal development has also seen strides as I continually put myself out of my comfort zone as I make meaningful relationships with classmates and Romans.
During block two there is also an overnight trip that is fully funded through the CIEE that allows students to explore cities out of Rome with classmates! I've met amazing new friends through this program and had the chance to travel with them, both within Italy and beyond. Studying abroad is a unique experience because, when else can you just pack up and explore the wonders of Europe with your classmates? If you're considering studying abroad with CIEE, I encourage you to take the leap.
You might not know exactly what you'll experience, but I can promise you that it will be life-changing.
