Embarking on a Journey: My Study Abroad Experience in Sevilla, Spain
By: Jesus Alanis
September 3rd, 2024, marked a significant milestone in my journey as a first-generation college student; it was the day I boarded a flight to embark on a four-month adventure across the world. The destination? Sevilla, Spain—a charming city renowned for its rich cultural heritage, particularly in Andalucía. Joining the CIEE Business and Society program was a dream turned into reality, placing a big check on my academic bucket list.
From Texas to Spain, the transition was exhilarating. The thought of studying business administration while immersed in a different culture was both thrilling and enlightening. Sevilla, with its vibrant streets and historic architecture, offered an unparalleled backdrop for learning and personal growth. The program not only focused on academic excellence but also on cultural immersion. Through CIEE, I had the opportunity to explore Andalucía extensively. Whether it was day trips or overnight stays, each journey brought new insights and experiences, deepening my appreciation for the region's unique history and traditions.
The value of studying abroad extends beyond academic achievements. It's about the transformation that comes with stepping out of your comfort zone and embracing a new way of life. For me, living in Sevilla meant more than attending classes; it was about building connections, understanding diverse perspectives, and crafting memories that will last a lifetime. Additionally, being in Europe provided the fantastic opportunity to travel to other countries. I could easily explore various cultures, from the artistic streets of Paris to the historic ruins of Rome, each trip broadening my understanding and appreciation of the European continent.
As I continue my senior year with graduation on the horizon in May 2025, I’ll look back at my time in Sevilla with a fondness that goes beyond words. It was here that I not only learned about international business but also about myself. To other students contemplating a study abroad experience, I say: leap into it with an open heart and let the journey transform you, just as Sevilla has transformed me.
