Q1: How does your personal background or identity shape your interest in Latin America?
My background plays a big role in shaping my interest in Latin America. I was born in the Dominican Republic and came to the U.S. when I was five years old, so Latin America has always been an important part of who I am. Growing up, I developed a strong curiosity about different Latin American cultures beyond my own. For example, I have always wanted to travel to Argentina, not only because I admire the distinct beauty of their accent, but also because of the cultural connections I’ve built through media. One of my favorite shows was Ojos que no ven, an Argentine program that I watched on YouTube, where people would declare their love for someone. It gave me a glimpse into Argentine culture and deepened my desire to experience it firsthand.
Q2: What partying advice do you have for other students who want to apply for this opportunity for spring 2026?
The advice I would give to students applying for spring 2026 is not to be afraid if it’s your first time traveling abroad. I was very nervous at first, but this is an experience you will never regret. You have the opportunity to fully immerse yourself in a new culture and environment, which is a truly unique experience. At the same time, remember that the experience is temporary; before you know it, you’ll be back to your routine. That’s why my biggest piece of advice is to enjoy it to the fullest: go out, explore, meet new people, and take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way.

Q3: What does “leading for change” mean to you?
Leading for change for me means using my experiences to guide and inspire others. It’s about taking what I’ve learned and showing those around me that growth and impact are possible. As a CIEE Fellow, I want to lead by example, demonstrating how we can create positive change within our communities. Leading for change also means encouraging others to believe in themselves, to see that their goals are achievable, and to share knowledge while working together toward a better future.
Q4: What does receiving this fellowship mean to you personally?
Receiving this fellowship means so much to me personally. Before this, I never thought studying abroad would be possible because of how expensive traveling can be. That’s why I feel truly grateful for this opportunity; it has opened my eyes and shown me that with hard work and the right support, anything is possible. I first learned about CIEE through my college advisor, who encouraged me to look into studying abroad. When I saw that there was a full scholarship available to study in Latin America, I decided to apply, and I’m so glad I did. This fellowship represents not only a chance to pursue my dream of studying abroad but also a reminder of the importance of perseverance, building connections, and believing in myself.

Q5: What local foods are you most excited to try?
I’m most excited to try asado, since I’ve heard it’s one of the best culinary experiences in Argentina, especially the chorizos. I also really want to try milanesa, because while Argentine meat is often prepared simply, milanesa is known for having more seasoning and flavor. And of course, I can’t wait to explore Argentine ice cream. I’ve already tried places like Lucciano’s and Vollo ice cream, but I’m excited to taste even more from different local shops and discover new flavors.
