Capturing Seoul: My Study Abroad Adventure in South Korea
By: Jack Beattie
My name is Jack, I attend Penn State and I am currently studying abroad in Seoul, South Korea. I am studying at one of the top universities in Korea, Yonsei University. Campus is in the center of Seoul, just North of the famous Han River. My campus is located right next to a few beautiful parks along the river, a great nightlife and food area, Hongdae, and countless awesome neighborhoods. Yonsei University has an incredible beauty to it, I have loved getting to see it in Summer, Fall, and now Winter.
Some of my favorite things to do in Korea have been photography, exploring temples and art museums, and traveling all around the country. I brought my 1973 35 mm film camera along with me and I have been taking photos around the city and as I travel to the countryside and the coast.
Seoul has lots of film development shops, so I have been able to meet some people through that hobby. Korea is one of the most photographable places I have ever been! Korea has some amazing art museums, most of which are free, and I have gone many weekends with friends I have met along my journey! Korean art, modern and ancient, is some of my favorite art.
The city has some gorgeous temples and palaces to explore, the largest one is in the center of city hall! During fall, I traveled to the amazing coastal city of Busan and the historic city of Gyeongju-si. Travel from city to city in Korea is mainly via express bus and bullet train, known as KTX. The country is extremely safe and travelable. I highly recommend visiting both of these spots!
I have been greatly enjoying my time in Korea and CIEE makes the transition so smooth. I have been learning a lot about the vast world as well as myself. I highly recommend studying abroad with CIEE and getting to know a new part of the world and a new culture!
