Study abroad will change your life! We asked alumni to reflect on their time abroad and share a few tips to help future students prepare for the journey ahead. Check out what Ethan P., from Oakland University, had to say about his time studying abroad in Rome!

Why did you chose to study abroad?

I chose to study abroad because I had goals to see the world. To give myself more perspective on what life is like outside of American culture. As a student of history I believed it was the right way to know the information and be able to carry that with me wherever I go.

What is one thing piece of advice you would give yourself before studying abroad?

Research every location as in depth as possible. At home you have an idea of what you want to see. But when you arrive and make new friends, your travels will take you in an entirely different location.

In what ways di you see yourself grow and change while abroad?

I came back a completely different person. I was happier, more relaxed, and felt like I could succeed on my own. It is so exciting to experience the world and come home knowing that as soon as you step into a room, you will have more to connect about and share with others.

What was the biggest culture shock you faced? How did you adapt?

Language barrier was tough. It immediately made you feel hated or doubt yourself as genuinely nice person. Your patience are tested and you have to learn ASAP. I took courses on Italian and did research when I traveled to Germany before arriving!

How would you summarize your study abroad experience in one word?

Incredible.
