Academics

Combining theory and hands-on practice, this program is designed for students considering a career in communications. Students can take courses offered by CIEE; Cursos Concertados with international students at the Universidad de Sevilla; or direct matriculation courses with Spanish students at the Universidad de Sevilla, the Universidad Pablo de Olavide, or EUSA School of Communications. Along the way, students learn about Spanish culture with a range of projects and activities. Great emphasis is placed on helping students explore their host community with a greater sense of purpose and reciprocity in their exchanges.

EUSA School of Communications is a prestigious, private institution offering courses that are academically accredited by the Universidad de Sevilla. Classes on the tools, theory, and history of media are taught by local media professionals.

Universidad de Sevilla has been one of Spain’s leading institutions of higher learning since the 16th century. It hosts 75,000 students and its many schools, departments, and institutes serve the educational needs of Spain’s most populous region.

Universidad Pablo de Olavide (UPO) is the second-largest state university in Seville and hosts some 11,000 students. Its 345-acre campus is 30 minutes from the center of the city. UPO offers undergraduate and graduate programs in traditional majors, as well as other areas, from biotechnology to translation. Modern facilities include campus-wide internet access, sports facilities, science labs, and more.

CIEE Seville is located in a beautifully renovated palace, built in 1725. It is close to the Royal Alcazar palace, and a 10-minute walk from the Universidad de Sevilla. The site includes classrooms, a computer room, student services, the Language Resource Center, and the Liberal Arts team.

Language placement – Prior to departure for Seville, all students take a CIEE online placement exam. Results determine appropriate placement in language courses. Placement in many upper-level courses depends on a high score.

Language support – The CIEE Language Resource Center is staffed by language professors and Spanish students majoring in Spanish philology. CIEE organizes tutorials to help students progress in content courses taught exclusively in Spanish. Tutorials are also offered for regular university courses.

Students agree to speak only Spanish to encourage language and cultural acquisition.

Academic Culture

Class attendance is mandatory, and students are expected to complete work and exams as scheduled. Students should be aware that academic and exam schedules may vary between academic institutions, and plan accordingly. During the fall semester, there is no extended vacation period. During the spring semester, there are two one-week breaks: Semana Santa (normally the week before Easter) and Feria de Abril (normally two weeks after Easter).

Class Format

CIEE classes and Cursos Concertados at the Universidad de Sevilla are scheduled Monday through Thursday and meet twice a week. Direct enrollment courses are scheduled Monday through Friday. CIEE classes are only open to CIEE students. The program’s core courses usually include students from the Universidad de Sevilla. Cursos Concertados are open to other international students.
