Your Destination
Madrid's influence in politics, education, science, entertainment, media, fashion, and arts makes it an important international metropolis and the primary hub of southern Europe. Summer in Spain's capital city is full of exciting events, including the annual Gay LGBTIQI+ Pride celebration, World Tapas Day, arts festivals like PHhotoEspaña, and access to world-renowned art museums. A wide variety of tapas bars, dance shows, concerts, parks, soccer matches, outdoor swimming pools, and contemporary theater and cinema make Madrid a lively place to live and learn. Only steps away from the historic Puerta del Sol, CIEE Madrid is located in the heart of Madrid's downtown area, and all the city's vibrant culture has to offer.
CIEE wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local CIEE staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Madrid.
The Culture
Featured Excursions
Visit the world heritage site of El Escorial – the largest Renaissance building in the world – built under the reign of King Philip II of Spain in the 1500s. Located in the northern mountains – about a one-hour drive north of Madrid city – El Escorial gives visitors a view of daily life in the royal court and its impressive architecture, where decisions were made at the height of the Spanish Empire. Students also have an opportunity to explore the neighboring 18th-century village of San Lorenzo.
Other Cultural Activities
- Explore beyond Madrid with day trips to the medieval city of Toledo and UNESCO World Heritage sites like Alcalá de Henares.
- Discover the flavors of Spain while learning to cook. Learn the correct type of rice to use to make authentic paella and try your hand at flipping a Spanish tortilla.
- Is the outdoors more your style? Try kayaking and hiking to beat the heat, or dip into one of Madrid´s many public swimming pools while learning about Spain´s approach to environmental preservation.
- Experience the breathtaking works of art at the Prado, the most visited art museum in Spain.
- Treat yourself to a uniquely Spanish cultural experience in a workshop where Flamenco dance and music is performed live

Housing & Meals
Housing
CIEE Madrid offers diverse housing options to maximize your study abroad experience, including student residence halls, or shared apartments in several city districts. All housing options are located near supermarkets, restaurants, gyms, and public transportation and provide the convenience of urban living in one of Europe’s largest cosmopolitan cities.
Student housing in Madrid typically looks different than what you may be used to in the U.S. Unlike most college campuses, CIEE does not own or manage student housing in Madrid. We work within local housing networks to carefully identify housing partners, vendors, and homestay hosts that offer students a culturally active living experience.
All Madrid housing sizes, room designs, and amenities vary and have their own distinct features. Living in Madrid may mean downsizing for the duration of your stay, as student housing space and location are at a premium (for example, living space, kitchen, washing machines, or bedroom size may be smaller than what you’re used to at home). In the summer, CIEE only guarantees that each room has a fan, and only a select few accommodations may have centrally controlled air conditioning.
Standard Housing: Includes a double room in a shared apartment or student dorm located within a 30- to 60-minute commute of CIEE Madrid and the city center. Meals are not included in the dorms or apartments.
- Shared Apartments: Shared apartments are modest in size and feature a few amenities like basic furniture, laundry facilities, Wi-Fi access, a room fan, maintenance repair services, bed linens, towels, and a kitchen.
- Student Dorms: Student dorms are modern, offer Wi-Fi access, and typically house students in single or shared bedrooms with an individual or shared kitchen. Dorm locations may vary.
Select Housing Plus: Includes a single room at a shared apartment or student dorm residence hall located within a 30-minute commute of CIEE Madrid and the city center. Meals are not included in the dorms or apartments. Select Plus housing requires an additional fee.
- Shared Apartments: Shared apartments are modest in size and feature a few amenities like basic furniture, a laundry machine, Wi-Fi access, a room fan, maintenance repair services, bed linens, towels, and a kitchen.
- Student Dorms: Student Dorms are modern, offer Wi-Fi access, and typically house students in single or shared bedrooms with an individual or shared kitchen. Dorm locations may vary.
A note: The default criterion to assign housing is first-come, first-served; however, other factors may also be considered. If we cannot accommodate your first housing choice, we'll let you know before you arrive.
Meals
Residence Halls/Shared Apartments: Meals are not included. Residence halls and apartments have direct access to supermarkets, restaurants, public transport, and independent dining halls. Students can purchase dining hall meal plans on their own if offered by the residence hall management.
Academics
Students take two credit-bearing courses each block of attendance. Students can also enroll in an optional Survival Spanish course (non-credit) during a single block. In-class work is augmented with co-curricular visits to the city’s rich variety of cultural institutions and organizations relevant to the course offering.
CIEE Madrid is located near the Puerta de Sol and includes classrooms, lounges, Wi-Fi, student life, and academics.
Arizona State University: Enhance your international academic coursework with optional online courses that best align with your degree requirements and interests.
