A picturesque town on the Costa Blanca of Spain, Alicante boasts huge plazas, wonderful parks, stunning beaches, and a rich culture. It’s also experienced a development boom recently — along with rapid population growth. Mingle with the locals as you explore modern architecture, historic buildings, and shopping malls next to centuries-old open-air markets, all with a distinct Spanish flavor.

The Culture

  • Take a day trip to the Alicante Province or the Valencian Autonomous Community.
  • Go on guided tours of monuments and museums in Alicante.

    Homestays: Students live in Spanish-speaking homes, where they are considered a member of the family with the same rights and responsibilities as other family members. Homestays are located throughout the Alicante downtown metropolitan area – anywhere within a maximum 30-minute commute to CIEE via public transport.

What you need to know

The program details

Study at the CIEE Study Center in Alicante, located next to the Faculty of Education and one of the residence halls on the northwest extension of the Universidad del Alicante main campus in San Vicente. This location provides students direct access to university facilities.

Courses are taught by faculty specialized in the field of teaching Spanish as a second language.

CIEE classes are in Spanish.

    Classes are for CIEE students only.


    In language classes, grades are based on weekly quizzes, exams, attendance, homework assignments, oral presentations, and class participation. Grades in the content courses are based on class participation, a midterm exam, research papers, oral presentations, and a final exam.



    Students must have an overall GPA of at least 2.5.




Recommended Credit

  • Total credit: 10 semester/15 quarter hours per session
  • Contact hours: 150.

Students are required to enroll in three Spanish language classes at their level (based on the results of a placement exam).

Program Fees

CIEE offers the most student support of any provider in its program fee, including an airport greeting, full-time leadership and support, orientation, cultural activities, local excursions, pre-departure advising, and CIEE iNext travel insurance with benefits.

Estimated Costs

Students are responsible and manage costs related to travel, meals, books, and personal expenses. Below are estimates for consideration.

International Airfare = $1,350

Financial Aid

CIEE offers the most grants and scholarships of any study abroad organization, including $5 million/year in travel grants, merit-based scholarships, MSI grants, Gilman matching grants, and Pell matching grants.

Students required to study on CIEE programs through a School of Record will be charged a $500 administrative fee in addition to the Program Fees listed.
