You will enroll in a combination of CIEE courses, one required language course, and courses taught online through CIEE's global academic partner, ASU. Arizona State University (ASU): Brought to you by CIEE in partnership with ASU, enhance your international coursework with online classes that align with your degree requirements. ASU offers thousands of online courses in asynchronous 7.5-week sessions that fit within the CIEE academic calendar.

Requirements

  • Two-week Intensive Moroccan Colloquial Arabic
  • Semester-long Modern Standard Arabic
  • Three CIEE electives
  • Online Course Options: substitute up to two ASU online area studies courses

Program Credit

Total credit, semester: 16-17 semester/24-25.5 quarter hours. Total credit, academic year: 32-34 semester/48-51 quarter hours.

Course Credit

  • CIEE courses: 3-4 semester/4.5-6 quarter credits; 45-60 contact hours
  • CIEE Internship: 3 semester/4.5 quarter credits; 15 seminar hours, 100-120 internship placement hours

Academic Culture

Classes are held Monday through Friday during the intensive cycle, and Monday through Thursday during the regular semester. Attendance is mandatory. Teaching methods combine lecture and interactive styles. Arabic professors provide extensive bibliographies for students. As students gain proficiency in Arabic, center staff members encourage them to use their language skills in everyday settings.

Arizona State University: Most ASU online courses are asynchronous. You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. You’ll receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online.

Class Format

Students take classes only with CIEE students. CIEE elective courses are taught in English. Teaching methods involve lectures, tutorials, community projects, seminars, and fieldwork. Guest lectures, field trips, and excursions are an important part of the academic curriculum.

ASU online courses meet in “sessions” that are 7.5-weeks long in the semester, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other CIEE courses begin or end.

Grading

All courses include continuous assessment and may include quizzes, exams, individual and group presentations, research projects, and papers. Courses follow a standard U.S. grading scale of A-F.

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person. “Pass/fail” or “Audit” is not allowed for CIEE students.
