Your Destination

Rome is simply a one-of-a-kind destination. Once the center of Western civilization, and with a history spanning almost 3,000 years, Rome houses some of the world’s most-visited attractions. It also includes Vatican City, an independent country within Rome’s boundaries and the seat of the Pope, not to mention the home to the Vatican Museums, including the Sistine Chapel. Thanks to its unparalleled beauty, Rome repeatedly hosts international movie productions – more recently for “The House of Gucci,” the upcoming “Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning,” and Angelina Jolie’s “Without Blood.”

CIEE Rome occupies the main floor of the prestigious Palazzo Capizucchi and it is a short walk from some of the main landmarks of the city, such as the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, and the Spanish Steps.

CIEE wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local CIEE staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Rome.

Academic Culture

The program is made up of three weeks of classes including an intensive orientation. Each course is a full semester in content, so the pace is accelerated, and the workload is demanding. CIEE courses are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. The class environment typically features a combination of traditional lectures and discussions with co-curricular excursions and activities. Heavy emphasis is placed on student participation. To avoid falling behind, students should not plan personal travel out of Rome when classes are in session and plan trips for the weekends.

Class Format

Courses taught at CIEE Rome are for CIEE students only. Courses are taught Monday – Friday, and attendance is strictly enforced both for classes and required co-curricular excursions. Students should expect an average of two hours of preparation required for each hour in class. Instruction is supported and augmented online by our learning management system, Canvas.

Grading

Assessment is based on the individual’s overall performance in the course, including attendance, essays, coursework, and final examinations or papers. Students must check with their professors to find out exam and project presentation dates. Under no circumstances will CIEE alter deadlines or exam dates for study abroad students who have made conflicting travel plans. The U.S. grading scale of A-F is used. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi.
