Academic Culture

CIEE courses are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. The class environment typically features a combination of traditional lecture and discussion with co-curricular excursions and activities. Heavy emphasis is placed on student engagement. Similar to classes at U.S. institutions, students should expect to spend an average of two hours of preparation and study for each hour in CIEE classes.

CIEE courses typically run from Monday through Thursday, providing students with a concentrated schedule that allows for intensive study and exploration. This condensed format encourages students to fully engage with the material and make the most of their time. Attendance is mandatory for CIEE courses.

ADL: The academic culture at Accademia del Lusso in Milan is deeply rooted in a hands-on, industry-integrated approach that merges Italian fashion heritage with global innovation. Students engage in small, personalized classes led by industry professionals, participating in real-world projects, workshops, and fashion shows that foster teamwork and practical problem-solving. Located in Milan's fashion district, the academy offers immersive experiences through its Luxury Lab, providing access to cutting-edge facilities and direct exposure to the dynamic fashion and luxury sectors.

IULM: Courses taught at IULM University in Milan are known for integrating theoretical knowledge with practical application, particularly in fields such as communication, fashion, media, languages, and creative industries. The university emphasizes a transdisciplinary approach, encouraging students to engage in collaborative projects that cross traditional academic boundaries, thereby fostering critical thinking and innovation. IULM's commitment to experiential learning is further exemplified by its incorporation of contemporary topics like artificial intelligence into the curriculum, reflecting its dedication to preparing students for the evolving demands of the global workforce

UCSC: Courses at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan are designed to provide a globally oriented, interdisciplinary learning environment tailored for international students. All courses included in the International Curriculum are taught in English and emphasize intercultural exchange, critical thinking, and real-world application, often incorporating in class lectures and site visits.

Arizona State University: Most ASU online courses are asynchronous. You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. You’ll receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online.

Class Format

CIEE classes are for CIEE students only. Classes are small, typically with up to 15 students per class, and emphasize communication and work in small groups. Instruction is supported and augmented online with our learning management system, Canvas.

ADL courses take place Monday through Friday. Class size varies from 7 to 15 students; courses are taught in English and students are typically graded on group projects, in-class presentations, essays or papers and final exams. Attendance is required and active participation in class counts towards the final grade.

IULM classes are typically scheduled Monday through Friday, class sessions last 2 hours, and students are expected to complete two hours of independent work for each hour spent in class. Class size varies from 35 to 40 students.

UCSC classes are typically scheduled Monday through Friday. The “International Curriculum” program is in English, with international students. Attendance is required; participation in class is expected. Students are typically graded on midterm and final exams. Participation makes up a percentage of the final grade.

ASU online courses meet in “sessions” that are 7.5-weeks long in the semester, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other CIEE courses begin or end.

Grading

The U.S. grading scale of A-F is used. In CIEE courses, students are graded on the basis of attendance, class engagement, homework, project work, presentations, and mid-term and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi.

ADL: Students are evaluated according to the Italian university grading system, which ranges from 18 (pass) to 30 e lode (honors) for outstanding performance. Assessment criteria typically include participation, group work, presentations, and midterm or final exams.

IULM: Students are assessed using the Italian university grading scale, which ranges from 18 (the minimum passing mark) to 30 e lode (honors), awarded for exceptional achievement. Grades are determined through a combination of class attendance, project work, presentations, and final exams. Some courses might also include midterm exams and more practical assessments, depending on the subject area.

UCSC: UCSC employs the local university grading system, which uses a scale from 18 to 30, with 18 being the minimum passing grade and 30 e lode (with honors) representing outstanding performance. Students’ grades are based on attendance, project work, presentations, and midterm/final examinations.

CIEE reports final grades for host institution courses using recommended U.S. letter grade equivalencies, following a predetermined grade conversion scale

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person. “Pass/fail” or “Audit” is not allowed for CIEE students.

Individual courses may have additional prerequisites; for CIEE courses, these are listed in the syllabi below. Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors.
