Requirements

All students take a combination of four or five FUA and CIEE courses per semester, for a total of 12-16 U.S. credits. CIEE strongly recommends students maintain a full course load of 15 or 16 credits.

As of Fall 2025, this combination must include:

  • One 3-week intensive course from CIEE or FUA
  • Minimum of 2 and maximum of 3 FUA courses
  • Inclusive of FUA courses fulfilling other requirements
  • Remaining FUA courses must be 11-week courses

Courses available at FUA are visible online by choosing the 15-week semester option for the appropriate spring or fall semester and year.

  • Online Course Options: substitute up to 4 credits online through ASU (after required minimum 12 credits in-person courses), in Session B only

Academic Culture

Host institution classes can be scheduled Monday through Friday. CIEE classes are scheduled Monday through Thursday. Students should expect to have daily homework assignments.

Arizona State University: Most ASU online courses are asynchronous. You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. You’ll receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online.

Class Format

Courses at CIEE and at FUA include lectures, discussions, critical analysis of readings, case studies, audio-visual documents, and field trips, and require active participation from the students. Some courses include compulsory field trips, such as a cooking class, a photography marathon, a visit to a museum, or a market.

ASU online courses meet in “sessions” that are 7.5-weeks long in the semester, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other CIEE courses begin or end.

Grading

CIEE reports all final course grades to students’ home institutions using a U.S. letter grade equivalent scale of A-F. For CIEE-administered courses, students’ grades are based on attendance, class engagement, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi.

Host institution grades are based on elements such as class participation, research papers, oral presentations, and midterm and final exams. Attendance is mandatory and absences affect final grades.

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person. “Pass/fail” or “Audit” is not allowed for CIEE students.

Individual courses may have additional prerequisites; for CIEE courses, these are listed in the syllabi below.
