Academic Culture
Students notice striking differences between education systems. Professors in France tend to be more formal than in the United States and do not see it as their role to give encouragement or individual attention to students. As a result, French students are generally very self-disciplined and self-directed. Classes will typically meet Monday through Friday. Students are expected to complete all the homework assigned and take exams when scheduled.
Class Format
Classes will be taken with other CIEE students only.
Grading
Grades are based on essays, written tests, oral presentations, out-of-class project reports, class participation, and final exams. Students can expect at least one midterm and one final exam during the term. The final exam can account for as much as 50% of the final grade. French professors use a French grading scale of 0–20, with 10 considered a minimal passing grade. All final grades will be converted into U.S. letter grades.
